Local youths recognized for efforts Two Georgetown youths were recently honoured with Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year certificates of recognition. Harnoor Gill, 14, and Hayden DownesMills, 10, were presented with their certificates by Independent & Free Press managing editor John McGhie. The Ontario Junior Citizen Awards are held every year by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) to recognize outstanding young people, age 6-17, who have performed worthwhile community service, acts of heroism or are "good kids" making life better for others and doing more than expected for someone their age. This year 176 young people across Ontario were recognized by the OCNA, with 12 of those being chosen as final recipients. Gill, a student at Stewarttown Public School, was recognized for his numerous volunteer efforts. Along with being a youth leader at Willow Park Ecology Centre, he is a member of the youth caucus of Protect our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.), writes for EcoKids of Earth Day Canada, is involved in various school groups and is on the Mayor's Youth Action Committee. Other groups he has volunteered with include Halton Children's Aid Society, Big DADDY Festival, Georgetown BIA, Georgetown Fall Fair, Conservation Halton, Milton Regional Spelling Bee, Halton Hills Public Library and Volunteer Halton and its Change the World campaign. After his letter, lamenting the loss of his bike, was published in The Independent & Free Press, Downes-Mills was inundated with offers of replacement bicycles. The Grade 5 Park Public School student came up with the idea of finding children in town who did not have bicycles and providing them with bikes free of charge. In the past two years he has given away more than 60 bikes to others who either didn't have a bike or had theirs stolen. He spends roughly 20 hours a week fixing and cleaning donated bikes before finding new owners for them.
