2 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 5 2012 RUDOLF RESCUE: Repeated long and loud horn and siren blasts from an Acton fire truck startled this chilled deer enough that it walked, then ran, away from the open water on Fairy Lake early Friday morning. The deer was first spotted, stuck with its front legs out of the water, around 7 a.m., and had laid down on the ice before rescuers arrived. Frances Niblock photos BOARDS AND COMMITTEES Appointments to Committees The Council for the Corporation of the Town of Halton Hills invites applications from members of the public who are interested in serving on the following committees. Loud horns and sirens save frozen deer again cover their ears, a fire captain hit the horn and then the siren and the deer, tentatively at first, began to walk away from the noise and the frigid open water. A few more blasts and it began to lope and then run out of sight in the growing fog, to the far side of the lake and safety, causing the humans to clap, high-five and shake hands at the good ending to the drama which began around 7 a.m., when someone told a snow plough driver a deer was frozen in the lake. At that point, the deer was half in the water with its front legs up on the ice, but when Gary Beck, an animal control officer from the Upper Credit Humane Society arrived, the deer had managed to get out of the lake and was lying down on the ice near the edge. Beck called police and the fire department, which sent out a crew who assessed the scene and then called the rescue unit, which was on-hold for an incident in Georgetown. As everyone waited, Beck suggested that the firefighters try startling the deer with the loud horns and sirens and to the immense relief of everyone there, it worked. With the first blast of the fire truck's horn, the startled, frozen deer painfully got to its feet on the ice at the edge of the open water on Fairy Lake last Friday morning. As three fire fighters, an animal control officer, a snow plough driver and his daughter held their breath, the deer stood, seemingly frozen in place.
