6 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 5 2012 Drunk driver found guilty in fatal crash The 22-year-old Mississauga man who drunkenly crashed his friend's car, killing him, paralysing an 18-year-old woman and injuring three others before fleeing the Acton accident scene, was found guilty of 14 charges by a jury in a Milton court on December 28. Todd McGowan remains in custody and will be sentenced on March 16. McGowan ­ who was driving his friend, Jeffrey Sandles' Hyndai because Sandles, 22, was westbound on Queen Street just before 3 a.m., on April 3, 2010, when he failed to make the curve and hit a tree on the front lawn of a house. The six people in the car, three men and three women, were on their way to look at a million dollar house when the accident occurred. McGowan fled the scene as his friend lay dying in the wreckage, and was arrested on the street the next morning. An 18-year-old female from Georgetown was paralysed in the crash, and two other females suffered non-life threatening injuries. Another male passenger, who suffered minor injuries, also fled before police arrived and was arrested in Mississauga the next day. Following a jury trail, McGowan was convicted of impaired driving causing death, four counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, four counts of dangerous driving causing injury, fail to remain in connection with the death, and three counts of fail to remain causing bodily harm. The court did not proceed with additional charges against McGowan including three counts of failing to comply with a probation order, possession of a controlled substance and fail to stop.
