6 THE NEW TANNER Murr money saves lives Cancer officials say `Thanks' The late Paul Murr would be "proud, but not surprised" that an annual golf tournament in his name has raised $883,000 for cancer research over the past 27 years. Tournament committee member Jon Hurst said Murr would have been happy with the $52,000 cheque presented to officials with the Canadian Cancer Society last Wednesday, at the first planning meeting for this year's tournament. "Paul was part of the original committee and his business skills and experience helped us a lot. It's pretty special to, first of all, have it named after him, but also to maintain the numbers that we do," Hurst said, noting the committee also gave $4,250 to Cancer Assistance Service of Halton Hills (CAShh) from last year 's proceeds. Before his death from pancreatic cancer in 1988, Murr was told the event would be renamed THURSDAY, JANUARY 12 2012 DROP-IN BASKETBALL: A small crowd practiced their basketball skills at the weekly Monday night drop-in at McKenzie-Smith Bennett School, including, from left: Avery George, Morgan McPhail, Justin Bumanag and Ryland Carmichael. Ted Tyler photo A c t o n 's Ta t i a n a Rheaume has not had a single speeding ticket or any moving infraction thank you very much since being the second person to graduate from the first season of Canada's Worst Driver. Rheaume, who was 42 years old and had been licensed to drive for 22 years during the first season in 2005, had been nominated by her mother-in-law. According to Worst driver rules the roads the show, Rheaume had a serious accident that "turned a competent driver into a paranoid wreck behind the wheel." She was accused of driving "hazardously slow" on highways, and refused to make left turns, which caused traffic jam-ups and made her sometimes drive in the wrong lane. At the time, Rheaume insisted that she really was not a bad driver, but the producers chose her because they liked her bubbly personality. The fact that she was the second of the class to graduate backed up her protests that it was all a joke. Five years later, she continues to tout her driving skills, which she called "very precise" adding the producers said she performed well behind the wheel, but they had to time her with a calendar because she drove so slowly. While most of the other contestants in that first season were "really good drivers, but they were insane," Rheaume said, drivers in subsequent seasons have been "scary." "Now that people know what the show is all about, they nominate people who are really clueless about driving safely," Rheaume said last Thursday, adding she's proud of her clean driving record. Lorraine Skarratt, manager of the Wellington Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society said the amazing hard work by the tournament committee raises money for cutting edge research which saves lives. "Sixty-three per cent of people diagnosed with cancer will survive it's the first time that we've been able to say that survivors are in the majority," Skarratt said, adding the on-going support from the Acton tournament is "wonderful." Tournament committee chair Allan Hall said the event has become a tradition that attracts loyal supporters and generous sponsors. He said they'd review a suggestion list compiled after the 27th tournament in May to see where improvements could be made, and sponsor lists are being updated so letters asking for participation its $1,000 to be a Platinum sponsor can be mailed for this year's event on the first Monday after Mother's Day.
