THURSDAY, JANUARY 26 2012 THE NEW TANNER 15 Mayor's Corner By Rick Bonnette Where were you when Paul Henderson scored the winning goal to give Canada the win over Russia in the 1972 Summit Series? I know where I was, but I can't tell you because some educators may be upset with me - LOL. Halton Hills will have a chance to re-live those memories as Paul Henderson will be coming to Town on February 18. Halton Hills will host the Paul Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour at Mold-Masters Sportsplex. There will be a lot of Team Canada memorabilia on display. Don't miss an opportunity to meet Paul as he will be there from 1 to 3 p.m. ***** Since Council approval of the Town's practical Green Plan in 2008, the Plan has led to the implementation of actions that have improved the health of our natural environment. The Green Plan has remained a living document. The Plan's implementation has been highly successful because its 70 recommendations are practical. The success of the Green Plan has provided a solid foundation from which to branch into the broader concept of sustainability where we will all strive to reach a higher quality of life by focusing on economic prosperity, environmental health, social well being and cultural vibrancy in Halton Hills. ***** The budget process is over and the over-all tax increase is 2.6 per cent including School Board, Regional and o f c o u r s e t h e To w n . The budget includes the commitment of the twin pads at MoldMasters, completion of the Georgetown Library and Culture Centre, in addition to road construction, bridge replacement, storm sewer reconstruction, new firefighters and many other services. ***** Looking forward to the first ever Acton Winter Carnival on Sunday (January 29) at Prospect Park. Lots of outdoor activities are being planned. Should be fun for the whole family. ***** Thank you to Jim Ford for his recognition of over 40 years in Kinsmen Girls softball. You have been an inspiration and a mentor to many young people in our community. ***** Congratulations to Neil Cotton on being named the Hockey Heritage winner for 2012. ***** Keeping it real. Submitted Photo Soccer is "more than just a kick in the grass," as the Acton Soccer Club pres Ian Watson likes to remind us; in his native Latin of course. And, the erstwhile footy exec brought that "more" with him Friday night, in adult 35 recreational indoor action; since no Kickin' the Grass: A Survivor's Tale local ladies will admit to over 35 this time of year, Watson was forced to make up the "Lad's" (Purple) and "Lass's' (White) from a very lame pool. As no jerseys may match the goalkeepers' colours, spectators were ejected. The Pres hoped to secure an ill-gotten victory by sending Ref Marc Van den Akker home, but was foiled when Van den A. dressed for White and demolished Purple with left-footed volleys. Pres retaliated with plenty of smooth goals of his own, and cajoled building staff to dim the lights on White's possessions. As time wore on and the "men" wore out, even the clock slowed in rhythm with the game, which only ended when the Pres invoked an ill-timed "next goal wins!" rule. Ah, the Beautiful Game. I f i t a i n 't p l a y e d i n Acton, it ain't soccer. Atom AE Tanners win first OMHA playdown game The Smooth Solutions Acton Tanners Atom AE team are in a battle against t h e E r i n H i l l s b u rg h Devils in a "best-of-five" series. Game one saw the Tanners play as a team and the results showed. Opening the scoring only three minutes into the game was Michael Haggett, assisted by Tristan Wight. With great pressure in the Devils' zone, Logyn Nyitrai was able to bank in a rebound for a nice goal, assisted by Spencer Booth and Haggett. Minutes later, Brady Worthman found the back of the net on a great little pass from Brandon Hatt and Zach Booth. Then, Erin-Hillsburgh capitalized on a few mistakes and were able to score two goals to close the gap. The Tanners did not stop working hard and were rewarded, as Spencer Booth deked out the goalie to put Acton up for good. Eric Marrows put the game away with an empty net goal, assisted by Worthman and Hatt. Josh Dunbar did a great job in net to hold off the Devils and give the Tanners a 5-2 win. The Tanners take a 1-0 lead in the series. The coaching staff was pleased with the kids' effort and the display of teamwork, which has been stressed all year.
