BONSPIEL BEST: The team of Mac MacKenzie, skip (left), vice-skip Rick Armstrong, second Mike Gallagher and lead June Longstreet won the fifth annual MacMillan's Bonspiel at the Acton Curling Club last Tuesday. George Henderson photo Bonspiel winners L a s t T u e s d a y, t h e Acton Seniors Social and Curling Club hosted the fifth annual MacMillan's Bonspiel at the Acton Curling Club on Churchill Road. A full roster of 64 avid senior curlers attended and a great time was had by all. The Championship team, all from the Acton Novice Tanners open play-offs T h e C h u d l e i g h 's Acton Tanners Novice BB opened their OMHA playoffs with the first three of a twelve game round robin - they played well enough to win, but luck was not on their side as they earned one point out of six. First, they hosted ErinHillsburgh in a tight game. Acton's Chris Harriott made point blank stops to keep the Devils off the score sheet as the game went to overtime tied 0-0. The Tanners kept offensive pressure on the visitors through the extra frame, but couldn't find the net and with minutes to go, the Devils managed to slip one in to escape with a 1-0 win. Next, Acton travelled to Guelph to face the Storm who opened up an early 2-0 lead, but the Tanners didn't quit and fought back in the third to close the gap on a goal by Evan Ashe from Jackson Phillips and Owen Kennedy. Minutes later, Acton appeared to score the equalizer, but the goal was called back on a controversial call. That fired the Tanners up even more as they hemmed the Storm in their own end for the rest of the game, but couldn't bury one as the game ended 2-1. Finally, Acton hosted Guelph looking for redemption and dominated play for most of the game. After Guelph got a quick 1-0 lead, Acton's Matthew Geim countered from Jaret Rosenburg and Thomas Holmes. Guelph took back the lead but Kennedy replied unassisted. Guelph jumped ahead again but the line of Phillips, Ashe and Rosenburg teamed up to pot two in a span of seven seconds to take Acton's first lead. Guelph tied it again and Acton stole the lead back on a top shelf blast by Riley Drexler, from Phillips a n d K e n n e d y. T h e visitors scrambled to knot it up late before Acton continued to dominate a furious overtime period that went scoreless for a 5-5 final. A c t o n 's p l a y o f f s continue this weekend when they travel to E r i n - H i l l s b u rg h a n d Schomberg.
