School happenings 9 ·The IFP· Halton Hills, Thursday, June 28, 2012 Nina's Place, a sexual assault/domestic violence care centre in Burlington, is the beneficiary of $5,000 thanks to the efforts of a group of Acton High School students (second from left), Annalisa Scigliano, MaiLynne Chang and Aria Gaeta, who were taking part in a nation-wide program called Youth & Philanthropy Initiative Canada. As part of a civics class at AHS, students were asked to adopt a community-based charity in the area, visit the facility and put together a presentation on how that organization functions. The AHS winners emerged victorious and then attended The May Event in Toronto along with other YPI winners from schools across Canada. Photo by Ted Brown As another school year drew to a close, local crossing guards were celebrated at a special appreciation ceremony and luncheon at St. Joseph School in Acton. Mayor Rick Bonnette presented the guards with gift bags and certificates during the ceremony, which was followed by a picnic lunch in the schoolyard.
