THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2012 Sharks snuff Lightning In Acton Ladies hockey p l a y o ff r o u n d r o b i n action, Active Choice Sharks blanked Acton Optical Lightning 4-0. Daina McKellar scored a goal in each period. Barb Watson also scored for the Sharks. Pamela Ireland drew two assists. Dana Selby, Connie Harrison and Barb Redford had single helpers, and Kristy Hayward earned the shutout for the Fish. In the second game, Smooth and Trendzy Cougars upset DNR Contracting Devils 4-2. Carolyn Hill put the Devils in the lead from Nicholl Spence and Lori McIntyre. Kim Bandy Bollert replied for the Cougars 30 seconds later in the first period. Spence bulged the twine in the second period to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. Christy Gedge went to work and scored two THE NEW TANNER 13 goals and added an assist as the Cougars scored three unanswered goals in the third period. Carrie Gallant rounded out the scoring and Liz Holmes had an assist. To m o rro w (F ri d ay ) Acton Optical Lightning face off against DNR Contracting Devils at 10 p.m., and Active Choice Sharks visit Smooth and Trendzy Cougars at 11 p.m. Sports with The New Tanner Bearcat's battle at OFFSA The Acton High School Bearcat senior girl's volleyball team battled to the consolation semi-finals at (OFFSA) Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships on Wednesday at Ryerson University. The Bearcats dropped three close games ­ 27-25, 26-24, and 25-21 to Quinte Christian High School, which ad v an ced t o t h e consolation final. The Bearcats ad v an ced t o t h e consolation division semi-final after taking three straight games ­ 25-17, 2725, 25-20 ­ from Seaway District High School in the quarter-final on Tuesday. The Bearcats downed University of Toronto Schools 25-20 and 15-13 to advance to the consolation best three-of-five quarterfinals. In pool play on Monday, the Bearcats dropped two games ­ 10-25 and 16-25 ­ to Chippewa, and then took two games ­ 25-22 and 15-3 ­ over Toronto District Christian School. In its final game on Monday, the Bearcats dropped two games to St. Thomas Aquinas, 13-25 and 1225. With five returning starters on the team, Coach Angela Kennedy with her family to Africa. The Acton gym was full last Monday as the Bearcats played the GHAC (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Council) final against ACMT from Hamilton. "It went five games and we won in the fifth," Kennedy said, adding, "it was 12-15, and they really struggled without her (Kollenhoven), and they really pulled it together and won the game," she said, noting the single A team won all-Halton championship against a double A team. Heading to OFFSA, Kennedy believed the "big nerves" were gone and the team was ready. This was not the first trip to OFFSA for four Bearcats who played on last year's team which earned a 10th over-all finish at the provincial competition. Novice BB Tanners in OMHA final The red hot Chudleigh's Acton Tanners Novice BB extended their OMHA playoff win streak to nine games with a 4-2 win over the Erin-Hillsburgh Devils in the finale of their twelve-game playoff round robin. The win locked up first place in the pool and a date with the Devils in the best-of-seven OMHA Central Championship series, a rematch of last years' finals, which gets underway this weekend. The Tanners got on the board early on the power play as Jackson Phillips won the draw to Jared Pike who banged it in. Next, Benoit Cuerrier fed a pass to Phillips who moved in only to be denied by a sprawling Devils goalie, but Jaret Rosenburg pounced on the rebound and slid it in the open cage. In the third, Owen Kennedy stripped the puck from an Erin defender and bulged the twine to open up a 3-0 lead. The Devils struck back with a power play goal before R o s e n b u rg c o r r a l l e d another loose puck and lit the lamp again to thwart any comeback hopes for the visitors. Matthew Lantz was solid in net for Acton in picking up the win. O n e n i g h t e a r l i e r, Kennedy's four point effort (G, 3A) paced the Tanner attack as Acton edged the Guelph Jr. Storm by a 4-3 margin. Phillips, Riley Drexler and Matthew Geim, with the late game winner, also scored with helpers going to Rosenburg, Phillips and Geim. Chris Harriott notched the win between the pipes for Acton. The OMHA Finals begin this weekend with two games, the first on Saturday at 12 p.m., at Erin Centre 2000, and then Sunday at 12:30 p.m., in Acton. Peewee Chargers fall in Brampton The Acton Sobeys Peewee Chargers dropped a 6-4 loss to Brampton when the Bombers came out strong to take a 3-0 lead early. Acton charged back before the first period ended scoring twice within 1:05 span with goals from Tommy Renaud on a rebound, with assists to Eric McCallum and Jake Case. A nice pass from Case found Michael Allain open with a blast from the point cutting the lead to one. Just 45 seconds into the second period, Case tied the game at 3-3, and with 42 seconds left, Justin Lee gave Acton the lead with help from McCallum. Less than a minute into the third, Brampton tied the game, and then scored two quick goals for a 6-4 win.
