Turn clocks ahead This Sunday, the clocks spring ahead one hour in time, and it is a great time to test your smoke alarms and change their batteries. Fire Chief Brent Marshall strongly recommends testing the alarm after changing the batteries to ensure it is functioning. Along with pushing the test button to sound the alarm, another easy way to test it is to hold a lit incense stick 10 to 12 inches below the alarm and allow the smoke to drift into the de- vice, causing it to sound. Once the alarm sounds, fan the smoke away and give the device a quick vacuuming to ensure it is free of dust, which can affect the performance of the smoke alarm. Smoke alarms between seven and 10-years-old should be replaced, sooner if it has a manufacturer's expiry date, and should be properly installed and maintained to save lives, according to Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. "With the minimal cost of smoke alarms today, everyone should have working smoke alarms in their homes. With a little extra effort, we can keep any unnecessary tragedies from occurring in Halton Hills," Bonnette said. For more information call 905-877-1133 and ask for the Public Education Division.
