Lightning Strikes Devils In Acton ladies playoff hockey action Acton Optical Lightning struck down DNR Contracting Devils 5-1. The Lightning got out of the gate quickly scoring three times in the first period, one by Kari Cooper and two goals by Janet Garton. The Lightning then built up a 5-0 lead as Mary Joosten MAD SCRAMBLE: : Erin/Hillsburgh swarmed their net as Chudleigh's Acton Tanners Novice BB players put on pressure with strong shots on goal as Acton edged Erin-Hillsburgh 5-4 on game two of the OMHA finals Saturday at the Acton arena. The Tanners are on an 11 game OMHA playoff winning streak in the best-of-seven OHMA championship final series. Traci Gardner photo Novice Tanners Up 2-0 in Finals It was an exciting weekend for the C h u d l e i g h 's A c t o n Ta n n e r s N o v i c e B B team that continued their tear on an eleven game O M H A p l a y o ff w i n streak with two victories to open the best of seven OMHA Championship Final series with ErinHillsburgh. In the opening game with pressure on in enemy territory, the Tanners jumped out quick and struck early when Jackson Phillips fired one in from Owen Kennedy and Riley Drexler. For the rest of the first, the Devils maintained pressure, but Matthew Lantz held the fort and kept Acton alive turning away 14 Devils' s h o t s . T h e Ta n n e r s offence took over from there, potting three goals in each of the final two frames for the 7-2 win. Scoring for Acton were Phillips (4G, A), Evan Ashe (G, 2A), Drexler (G, 2A), Matthew Geim (G), Thomas Holmes (2A), and Kennedy, Jaret Rosenburg and Jordan Caruso with an assist each. In game two, Acton again got on the board first on a tally from Kennedy setup by Rosenburg and Laek Swain, but this time the Devils came back and scored twice in a minute span to take their first lead of the series. From there, the game went back and forth with Erin going up 4-3 early in the third, but with minutes left, Phillips roared in unassisted to send it to overtime. The teams traded chances throughout the extra frame but two minutes to go, Kennedy's shot from the side boards found a way through a maze of legs to sneak in and give Acton the 5-4 overtime win. and Kathleen Bevan scored in the second period, before Nicole Spence broke the goose egg on an unassisted goal for the Devils. Kasey Shoebridge, Gloria Lipp Stamp, Cooper, Bevan and Garton all earned assists for Lightning. In the second game, Carrie Gallant scored late in the third period to give Smooth & Trendzy Cougars a 2-2 tie with Active Choice Sharks. Christy Gedge put the Cats in a 1-0 lead in the first period from Liz Holmes. Daina McKellar tied it up in the second period from Dana Selby and Josey Bonnette. Pamela Ireland scored the second Shark goal from McKellar and Bonnette. The tie clinches a spot in the championship game for the Sharks. To m o r r o w ( F r i d a y ) S m o o t h & Tr e n d z y Cougars faceoff against Acton Optical Lightning at 10 p.m., and Active Choice Sharks visit DNR Contracting Devils at 11 p.m. The following week the four teams playoff for the championship at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Peewee Chargers Ride in Style against Owen Sound The Acton Sobeys Peewee Chargers traveled in style to Owen Sound to take on the Attack. Acton came charging out of the gate, after the Owen Sound goalie made a great save on a Tommy Renaud shot, Justin Lee was there to tap in the rebound. Andrew Grant made it 2-0, with assists from Sam Bergin and Jake Case. On a wrap-around Renaud rounded out the scoring in the first period with helpers going to Case and Mitchel Jeffrey. Acton kept coming in the second period, and Lee had his second assist to Jacob Pirri. Then, on a scramble in front of the Attack's net minder, Eric McCallum squeaked one through, with the lone helper to Michael Allain. Less than a minute later, Owen Sound ended Jack Coulighan's shutout bid. With only 42 seconds remaining in the second period, Case scored on a wrap-around, with assists going to Allain and Brady Borges. Rounding out the scoring in the third period Renaud scored his second, the lone assist to McCallum for a 7-1 final. The Peewee Chargers have two tournaments coming up in Streetsville and Buffalo.
