THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 13 Hockey Amalgamation To all affected hockey parents/players from Georgetown and Acton. Wi t h r e g a r d s t o t h e upcoming amalgamation of Georgetown and Acton (Tanners only) hockey associations I urge everyone to attend their Annual General Meeting of Members. The amalgamation process has not been completed as per the OMHA, and should a "motion" be brought forward by a member in good standing, prior to the meeting, then it could force a re-vote. I am not motivated by a desire to have the amalgamation stopped but rather by a desire to have those currently affected to have the voice of the decision. The last vote for this process happened 4 years ago and it should be revisited. Read your associations by-laws and attend to ensure quorum is met James R. Submitted photo Traffic update from MTO No word if plans for a Tim Hortons/gas station on the east side of the Highway 7 - 22 Side Road intersection are moving ahead, but in light of the potential for increased traffic in the area, the Town hopes the Ministry of Transportation will do additional traffic data collection and analysis this year. In letters back and forth between the Town, MTO and WellingtonHalton Hills MPP Ted Arnott, Town staff said that although the Hortons development application has been dormant for a year, given the speed and volume of traffic in the area, the need for traffic signals should be evaluated in a regular basis. T h e To w n i s a l s o concerned that the 30 km/h drop in speed from 80 km/h to 30 km/h for traffic on Highway 7 heading easterly into Georgetown, doesn't allow motorists the time and distance required to reduce their speed. The Town wants the MTO to reduce the speed limit to 70 km/h from Highway 7, west of Georgetown, to provide a transitional section from the rural 80 km/h to the urban 50 km/h sections. Town staff also told the MTO that providing a haul route around Acton is a "critical" issue as truck activity, particularly earth haulage, has increased over the past few years. Staff said because of a lack of suitable dump sites in the GTA, haulers are expanding their locations and have focussed on the Erin area, with the most direct route bringing trucks through Acton where the roads are not designed to accommodate the number of trucks. Staff said of particular concern is the Mill Street and Main Street intersection in Acton. The MTO said the province continues to work with Halton on a Transportation Master Plan, and continues to provide input to potential highway improvements as of a technical advisory group. The Town also wants the MTO to continue to monitor traffic volumes at Highway 7 and the Fourth and Fifth Line intersections where the Town believes left hand turn lanes are warranted. In response, the MTO said traffic volumes do not warrant eastbound or westbound turn lanes both intersections have right turning tapers. The MTO also said that the based on collisions, the numbers do not warrant traffic signals at either intersection. In order for traffic signals to be warranted based on collision history, the MTO requires 15 collisions over a threeyear period which would have been preventable by traffic signals. There have only been two such accidents in the past five years, so the MTO said that traffic signals are not warranted. Mayors for Meals Campaign 2012 Links2Care Meals on Wheels will participate in the North American 2012 Mayors For Meals campaign on March 20, 2012. The campaign is designed to promote the challenge of seniors' hunger and the role Meals on Wheels plays in the community to address this challenge. Begun as an annual event in the United States to increase public awareness, recruit new volunteers and increase funding for Meals on Wheels organizations, the program expanded to Ontario in 2009, and events will be held across Canada again this year. Mayors from around the country will be asked to help deliver meals with their local Senior Nutrition Program to seniors in their community. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette will help our volunteers deliver meals in Acton on Tuesday, March 20, in support of this event. We thank him for giving his time to this worthwhile program. Meals on Wheels provides a hot lunch to seniors and disable adults who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. The meals assist in the provision of adequate nutrition, which also helps the client live in their own home a little longer. This contact can also provide a check for the clients' well being. The meals are delivered right to the door by volunteers, who provide a friendly face and a smile to brighten up the day. There are several meal options available; hot, frozen and sandwich meals.
