6 Cancer can be beaten The Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society has been meeting to plan, once again, the beginning of the spring campaign. I am sure you are all familiar with the invitation to the volunteers of Acton to meet and greet as we begin the April fundraising campaign. Last year, we changed the concept of dinner and conversation and invited a well known cancer research specialist to speak. We opened the invitation to the general public as well as all volunteers. This evening proved so informative and was so well received that we are repeating it again this year. Nelson Ho, a research specialist at the University of Guelph, currently working toward his doctorate, is the guest speaker this year. This evening takes place Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m., at Knox Presbyterian Church, Acton. Why are we so interested in hearing about the research currently taking place? Ask just about any volunteer and you will probably hear about the loss of a loved one and the common reason for the battle lost, not enough medical knowledge to bring about a cure. That knowledge can only be found by research. It is research that is going to eventually free us from this terrible disease. THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 2012 CAShh can help April is fast approaching for our campaign of funds. For 12 years now Cancer Assistance Services has proven its power to care in our community. During April, invest and believe in the people and ideas that matter. Perhaps it doesn't matter to you today; however just imagine being diagnosed with cancer. Most are faced with treatments of surgery, chemo and / or radiation. Mustering up the strength to battle this disease usually is secondary to the stress of managing sick leave, care of children and home responsibilities. CAShh lessens the stress by providing transportation, or will reimburse for parking expenses when a family member does the driving. Food supplements to withstand weight loss, relaxation programs to regain strength, balance and energy, wigs, night hats, pretty scarves, special pillows for those in treatment, some equipment loans or help in the home when needed. The For Goodness Sakes program has proven a blessing to patients, and is designed to help ease the pressure of what cancer does to families. The April Residential campaign is our major source of income, and Breakthroughs are happening, lives that would have in peril a few years ago are being saved. But we continue to lose too many loved ones. We must keep up the fight. The Canadian Cancer Society funds approximately 60 per cent of all research done in Canada. Come out this year and hear Nelson Ho's power point presentation. Find out how important all your donated dollars are. Let's all work toward a better future.
