THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 3 Weight Loss Naturally Speaking with Advertorial Louisa McCarley RHN, ROHP/RNCP Spring is early this year: time to clean the yard, clean the house and yes, cleanse the body. Many people start thinking about weight loss. Did you know cleansing your body can have a positive affect on your weight loss goals? HEEL TOE DOSEY DOE: Members of the Acton Senior Centre's line dancing class and Centre members showed off some of their fancy footwork at a social dinner last Thursday at the centre. Submitted photo at Georgian Downs to try their luck at the slots. Some were even planning to attend the social dinner later in the evening at the Centre. Who says seniors don't have fun. The dinner was a great success. We enjoyed meatloaf Wellington with vegetables and a delicious chocolate mouse. Then we shook it all down dancing to Dream Boat. What a party. The door prizes winners were Jane McAllister, Nina Palichuk, Brian Alder (who was feeling very lucky as he also won the 50/50 on the bus trip), Arlene Bruce, Lorrie Ryan-Lewis, Louise Marjerrison, Judi Wanders, and Judy and Jeff Knuff who were celebrating their 43rd wedding anniversary. They each won a bottle of wine. The 50/50 at the dance was won by Linda Vanderlaan. On Tuesday, March 27 from 4:30 - 6 p.m., there will be an Internet workshop. Students from the Acton High School will be here to assist with the hands on training with the computers. Please sign up at the reception desk. Not everyone was on the bus, as there was the usual Thursday morning group playing canasta, and in the afternoon, the community hall was hopping with the line dancers having a great time. At the same time the members that play Bid Euchre were enjoying their game. Frances Hogenbirk had two mooners and Betty Brewer and Roberta Thompson each had one. If you play cards or would like to learn, come out and join them. You would be made very welcome. Real is arranging for a visit from a giant chocolate Easter Bunny again this year, If you purchase a ticket you might be lucky enough to take it home with you in time for Easter. Lois Van Volkenburg was the winner of the weekly 50/50 she won $64. How Toxins Affect Weight Loss Wendy tells me that about half our 282 members have had their pictures taken and receive their swipe identity tags. We go "live" on April 2, so it would be great to have as many people as possible register before that date. The Acton and Georgetown Seniors Centres are one of four Seniors Centres in Ontario to use this software. We received an EPC (Elderly Person Centre) grant through the Ontario Government. This enabled us to purchase the equipment which tracks visits, volunteer hours and many other things, freeing up valuable administrative time. Our operating grants rely heavily on this statistical information. When I arrived on Thursday morning there was a bus of excited seniors waiting to spend a few hours in Barrie playing Bingo. On the return journey they were going to spend a few hours When looking at weight loss it is important to take into account the affect that toxins have on our metabolism. Various studies have shown that toxins slow down the body's metabolic rate, decrease feelings of fullness leading to eating more and more calories and limit our ability to burn fat. Toxins not only lead to weight gain but also sabotage the ability to lose weight. Toxins cause water and fat retention. When faced with toxicity, our bodies respond by retaining water in an effort to dilute water-soluble toxins and retain fat to dilute fat-soluble toxins. Your body will store water and fat in order to protect you from the damage these toxins can do if they were flowing freely through your body. Toxins and Obesity There are a group of toxins called organochlorines (OC s). Because they are found in virtually everyone and are easy to detect and measure, OC s are frequently studied in association with obesity. We cannot get rid of them very well, so the body stores them in our fat cells. The more fat you have, the more toxins you retain. As we lose weight, the fat cells release the toxins into the bloodstream. Once these toxins are in the bloodstream, they can cause all kinds of trouble. Getting rid of them quickly is important (cleansing, fibre and water). Toxins decrease your ability to burn fat In a study as far back as 1971, the University of Nevada's Division of Biochemistry determined that chemical toxins weakened a special coenzyme that the body needs to burn fat by 20 percent. In a more recent study, done in 2002, researchers concluded that toxins released during weight loss had the capacity to damage the fat-burning mitochondria. The damage was significant enough to lower the body's ability to burn calories, and, in effect, fat. Let us create a Beautiful Smile for You! One of the first things toxins do when your fat cells release them into the blood is to slow down your resting metabolic rate (RMR). As you begin to lose weight, surfacing toxins can begin to work against your weight loss. One study that came out in 2002 looked at five factors that affected MRM during weight loss. Toxic OC s in the blood were partly to blame for lower RMR. The study also confirmed that of the five factors considered, including fat mass and appetite hormones, the presence of OC s were the most important factor influencing dampened RMR. The study further determined that the toxins were affecting the production of the thyroid hormones. Your thyroid plays a major role in your body's regulation of its metabolic rate. What this means is that if you can eliminate toxins from the body fast enough during or before weight loss, you may be able to reduce the decline in your metabolism.
