It is a way of life." Former Acton resident William Kirby, now a Biology student at Dalhousie University in Halifax is in the Race for Space an international contest run by Metro newspaper to call "shotgun" on the first commercial space flight in 2014. Kirby, who graduated from Acton High five years ago, currently holds first place in support in Canada among over 1,200 entries. The entries that receive the most votes in each Metro country will be judged by a local jury that selects one local finalist. Every Metro country will send one local finalist to the global final. The winner will be chosen by a global jury. The winner will attend two training missions in the Netherlands, before being flown to the Caribbean island of Curacao, where their space trip begins in a Lynx Mk II, where the winner will ride in the back seat, behind a professional instructor. Metro is asking people to tell why they are perfectly suited for the mission, and then gather as many votes as possible via Facebook or other social media channels. In his entry, called The Beginning of a New Era, Kirby writes: Space travel is undoubtedly the key to our future. Scientific literacy is embarrassingly low among many first world nations, and mankind needs a scientific revolution to get the public interested once again. I believe that event will be when we first walk on Mars. Yet, imagine if one of the scientists on on Sunday just before noon. Acton firefighters checked the house and found no problems. Oops A child accidentally hit a pull station at Acton arena just after 8 p.m. last Wednesday. Firefighters reset the alarm. BBQ fire A barbeque fire at a residence on Highway 7, west of the Fourth Line, had been extinguished by the homeowner, who had also shut off the controls, before Acton firefighters arrived on scene at 4:24 that first Mars mission digs into the Martian soil and discovers microbial life. This discovery would usher forth a scientific gold rush to Mars, and begin a technological boom the likes of which has never been seen. This is why I am pursuing a PhD in astrobiology; so I may be that scientist. I want to be the one to capture the minds of a generation, and inspire all who come after me to pursue scientific excellence. To me, space goes beyond mere interest. It is a way of life. Winning this contest would be an invaluable asset in acquiring research grants so that I may do more scientific research. With your support, I will be one small step closer to accomplishing my dream. The contest ends April 5. To support Kirby in his Race for Space, vote at http://metroinspace.com/ ca/galleries/top_entries last Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters turned off the tank.
