16 Concerns raised about the Acton quarry expansion another 18 to 24 years of production. Without it, all of the accessible limestone will be mined within three to five years. At the beginning of the year, Dufferin submitted a scaled back plan, which would reduce the extraction area by 32 per cent, excluding 12-hectares of woodland. Mott-Allen said JART would review the new plan before preparing a final report for the decision-makers. Some of the issues JART will deal with include Dufferin's ability to forever manage ground and surface water, and determine if Dufferin's Adaptive Management Plan will protect species and natural features that need water. Dufferin's Property and Resource Manager Andrea Bourrie said the revised smaller footprint was in response to comments made by the public and agencies about natural environments, including THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2012 Concerns about gravel truck traffic both volume and speed and well water quality and quantity were the main issues raised by the public at a recent Joint Agency Review Team (JART) update on Dufferin Aggregate's application to expand its Acton quarry. JART members are technical staff and consultants with the Region, Town, Niagara Escarpment Commission, Conservation Halton and provincial ministries. Welcoming approximately 25 interested residents to the meeting at Acton High School, JART Chair Nancy Mott-Allen noted that JART does not make decisions, but evaluates the impact that the proposed expansion would have on hydrology, natural resources, the Niagara Escarpment and agriculture. With maximum extraction of four-million tonnes a year, the expansion would give Dufferin BABY AND ME: Record crowds of savvy shoppers got great deals at the semi-annual Mom2Mom sale on Saturday at St. Alban's Church. No word if Rachel Donnahee of Georgetown bought this bear for sevenmonth-old Jacob. Angela Tyler photo wetland habitats for the Jefferson Salamander. Dufferin consultant Brian Zeman said the significant revision to the plan excludes Provincially Significant Wetlands, and 12-hecacres of woodland. Opposition to the expansion came from Lesley Adams, with P.O.W.E.R (Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources) who renewed the group's call for a ban on all quarrying on the Niagara Escarpment a United Nations biosphere citing potential loss of endangered species and water issues. Adams asked if the rehabilitated quarry would look like the one is St. Mary's or the Buchart Gardens in B.C. The progressive rehabilitation plan calls for Dufferin to convey 600 hectares into public ownership for uses that could include trails, biking, water-based recreation, and playing fields, and Bourrie said that vision could become a reality, beginning within five years of their application approval. In response to concerns from several residents about gravel truck traffic on 17 Side Road and Fourth Line one who said she "almost got hit by a speeding truck" Bourrie, who noted they can't control independent drivers - promised to discipline offending drivers when they are reported to Dufferin. No increase is truck traffic is anticipated because production would stay at current levels.
