Since November 2010, over 26 additional family physicians have located their practices in Halton. Additionally, a number of family physicians have been recruited to cover maternity and other leaves, and several other new family physicians have established part-time practices here. The program also assists hospitals with their specialist recruiting, such as psychiatrists, paediatricians, emergency room physicians and hospitalists. The Physician Recruitment Coordinator supports the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre family medicine teaching unit, which currently has six first year family medicine residents and is expecting another six to join this summer. The Halton Physician Recruitment program's comprehensive and coordinated region-wide marketing and promotion strategy includes, among other things, community tours and physician meetings for prospective family physicians, a website www.haltondoctors.ca participation in trade shows, recruiting events and an advertising campaign. Last year, the program added a special project, partnering with the local "Doctor's Hockey Club", a hockey team of physicians from across Halton and Mississauga, to host the 2011 Docs on Ice charitable hockey tournament in Oakville. The tournament raised over $150,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton. As a result of the funds raised, the Society's Oakville office was able to locate to new premises, pay for renovations and lease costs for three years. The new Docs on Ice Dementia Resource Centre in Oakville officially opened in January, 2012. In February 2012, the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) presented Halton Region with an EDCO Marketing Award under the Physician Recruitment category for its 2010 to 2011 marketing and promotion strategy, including Docs on Ice. This strategy was also honoured as one of four finalists for the EDCO Lieutenant Governor General's Award for Marketing Excellence for 2011.
