With cancer "picking a fight every three seconds with another Canadian," it is a word now all too common to too many people, as the cancer statistics indicate. Thank heavens the stats also show that for the first time, more people ­ 64 per cent ­ are living after a cancer diagnosis than are dying. That shift is due to earlier detection, better screening and new treatments that are able to attack the tumour, but not decimate surrounding tissue and organs. The research that will lead to a cure is expensive, another reason to dig deep this month when a cancer canvasser comes to your door, asking for a donation to the Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. *** Please also be generous when the Scouts/Guides/Cadets come to your door early Saturday morning to collect donated food for Acton's FoodShare food bank. To the Editor, There was recently a tempest in a teapot that really was much ado about nothing. About five weeks ago, a member of the community came to me and repeated a con versation to which he was privy. He told of a plot by someone to bring harm against my business by registering the name, Blue Springs Funeral Home, as their name. I went to the Ministry and, sure enough, the fee had been paid and the name registered to their company. I, admittedly had been asleep at the switch. Registration of a business name must be renewed, without notice, every five years, and shortly after my registration expired, the other person registered it. I, like most people, was mis informed. I believed the name belonged solely to who ever registered it first, and so I, not knowing what else to do, registered the new name "Blue Springs, the Acton Funeral Home." Interestingly, lawyer Margaret Chapman pointed out to me, it is not against the law for two people to have the same name nor is it illegal for two business to have the their time; logging thousands of hours and kilometers each month.
