THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2012 THE NEW TANNER Centre closure puts Acton job seekers at a `disadvantage' "The Acton community will suffer" with the planned July 31 closure of the Employment Resource Centre, operated on contract for the province by Links2Care, and the recent closure of two job centres, one in Milton and one in Georgetown that Acton job seekers would have used after the Mill Street centre closes. "Its going to be very difficult for Acton residents to continue to have the same support as when we had our doors open," Sandra Melhuish, the CEO and executive director of Links2Care said recently, adding, "I think it is going to be a tough haul for Acton." The province closed the Georgetown Centre for Skills Development and Training on March 31, along with the VPI Inc. job centre in Milton, leaving Melhuish to question how the government will be able to increase itinerant employment skills programs and services in Acton after the Employment Centre closes July 31. "How are they going to step up the services when they have a smaller amount of staff to do it with, and no increases in funds?" she asked. Melhuish also questions why an employment program that was operating so well is being cancelled, especially since they met and exceeded all service targets set by the province. "We were 218 per cent of our service deliverables. That really shows the need in the community and how well utilized the centre was," Melhuish said, glad for support from Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott, and Halton Hills Council to help find funding for the program that costs approximately $250,000 annually to operate. At a recent Town Council, politicians went on record again with "very deep concerns" about the closure of the Acton Employment Resource Centre. Mayor Rick Bonnette said the proposed service is "not good enough" and will put Acton residents at a "disadvantage," with no public transit to Milton, unlike the Go bus that runs through Acton to Georgetown. Regional/Ward Two Councillor Jane Fogal pointed out that two operators were offering the same employment services in both Milton and Georgetown, and now with one providing service in each community, there's no duplication. 7 Harnessing the power of information for a healthy work place On Monday, May 7, the Halton Region Health Department will host a free workplace health networking meeting for representatives of local businesses. The workshop will offer participants a chance to learn about how they can harness the power of information technology, including social media, to help promote workplace health and safety. The meeting will be of interest to anyone who is responsible for the health and well-being of their employees. The workshop takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville, with a continental breakfast scheduled prior to the meeting, at 8:30 a.m. "Social media tools provide another valuable avenue for employers to interact with staff and encourage participation," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "I encourage workplaces to take advantage of this opportunity to learn how online technologies can help build healthy working environments." The networking meeting will feature two keynote speakers from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). Participants will walk away with ideas on how to incorporate social media tools to support their health and safety initiatives and also discover reliable sources of health information on the web. "Social media is changing the way organizations work and how they communicate with their employees," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region.
