4 Mayor Rick Bonnette expressed gratitude for all the hours members spent volunteering. Georgetown Council member Dave Kentner was celebrating his birthday that day. Also present were Councillors Jane Fogel, Ann Lawlor and Bryan Lewis. My apologies to Sylvia Mitchell, who is happily married to Chris Mitchell, not Heinz Rusche as mistakenly stated in a volunteer appreciation photo cutline in last week's The New Tanner. The trip to Falls View Casino, Niagara was enjoyed by everyone. One person who was in the money was Barb Weldon, as she won the 50/50 on the bus. If you are interested in going to see Forever Plaid please sign up as soon as possible so I can reserve tickets. We will be using a Tyler school bus, and after the show will enjoy dinner at the Mandarin. May 8 will be the Birthday Tea and people celebrating their birthdays in April or May will be invited. At last weeks' Bid Euchre, Ruth Burke, Frances Hogenbirk and Shirley Hunter had mooners. Mary Walsma was a little disappointed last week. She and Gerri Kroezen THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRI 26, 2012 April 15 to 21 is Volunteer Week across Canada. To show their appreciation the Town of Halton Hills invited all volunteers from the Acton and Georgetown Seniors Centres to an appreciation afternoon tea last Tuesday. They enjoyed light refreshments, camaraderie, and music. It was great to renew acquaintances with members from the Georgetown Centre. Nonie Crete delighted us with her singing while playing the guitar and mouth organ. I noticed during the final song Danny Boy many people got out their Kleenex to wipe away a few tears. As usual, the moment the music was suitable for dancing there were people up dancing. It took a lot of hard work organizing everything and thanks go out to Sherry Mitchell, Terri Forbes, Wendy Krever, Michelle Durham, Simon Hickson, Mandy Kellar and Director of Recreation and Parks Terry Alyman who helped make the afternoon so enjoyable. On behalf of the Town, UNDER THE "B": Frances Hogenbirk (left) helped Ron Jeffries choose cards at the Acton Seniors Centre Bingo evening on Saturday. Stephanie Westaway and Kathy Gordon selected what they hoped were lucky cards. Julie Conroy photo made it to the Ontario Seniors Games cribbage semi-finals. They lost to Burlington. Well done Mary and Gerri. There were lots of happy Bingo players at the latest fund raising venture on Saturday evening. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves; some were our regular Friday Bingo players plus quite a few new faces. Donald Anderson won the weekly 50/50 last Friday. He received $375. I am sure he was very happy. Halton named a Smart Commute Gold workplace for 2012 For the first time, Halton Region has been designated as a Smart Commute Gold Workplace by Smart Commute, a program of Metrolinx, which acknowledges Halton's leadership in providing commuter options to benefit its employees. "Halton Region is proud to be a Smart Commute Gold workplace and setting an example in how small commuting changes can help the community and our workplace," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "Halton Region is just one chapter of the smart commuting success story. Smart Commute Halton, in partnership with Metrolinx, has 15 Halton business members that are reducing the number of cars on our roads, preventing greenhouse gas emissions and saving their staff money by encouraging their work teams to participate in smart commuting options." The Smart Commute Gold Workplace designation is awarded to outstanding workplaces that demonstrate innovation, focus on measuring their success and achieve significant positive outcomes, while successfully encouraging their employees to choose different ways to get to work other than driving alone. Last year carpooling by Halton Region employees alone removed 26,758-km of road travel from roads (equivalent to two roundtrip drives from Halifax to Vancouver); prevented 5,810-kg of greenhouse gas emissions (same weight as 53 stainless steel refrigerators); and achieved $16,531 in commuter savings (equivalent to more than 220 fill-ups at the gas station). In 2011, the 15 Smart Commute Halton member businesses eliminated 172,064-km of road travel (that distance is more than four times around the world); prevented 31,987 kg of greenhouse gas emissions (that weighs as much as nine elephants) and achieved almost $92,000 in commuter savings. Find more information on Smart Commute Halton at www.smartcommutehalton.ca. Interested residents looking to set up a carpool should visit Carpool Zone at www.carpoolzone.ca. Smart Commute, a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, helps local employers and commuters explore different commute choices like carpooling, cycling and transit. The goal is to ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making commuting less expensive and more enjoyable. We carry all major brands Best New aNd Used tire deals!
