THURSDAY, MAY 03, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 5 Allegations of `selective ticketing' at MSB School Halton police Constable Sarah McCullagh said she'd "have a talk" with an Acton man who angrily protested what he called the "selective ticketing" of traffic rule violators in the area of McKenzie-Smith Bennett School, where three students have been hit by vehicles, two away from the school, in recent weeks. Efforts to increase safety to date include a new regular presence of Town bylaw enforcement staff, and education for students and parents, many who regularly park and stop illegally as they drop off and pick up their kids. Last Monday, Michael Cunningham received a $30 fine for parking within one metre of the end of a driveway. The driveway in question on Mill Street East belongs to his sister, and Cunningham has permission to park there. On Wednesday, when Cunningham saw the Town's contract bylaw enforcement officer Alberta Recinos, ignore and not issue tickets to two vehicles parked in violation of the one-metre rule, he marched up to him and demanded an explanation. After some heated words, Cunningham left and a Halton police officer arrived and spoke to Recinos. She then said she would speak with Cunningham, but she would not why. For his part, Cunningham will fight the ticket. "It isn't the $30 ticket it's the way he acted. I'd been told by the principal to pull up at the front (of the school) because my son had been beat up by two students. It was 4:10 and there were no buses, and he (Recinos) came over and made a big deal about that, so I moved over to Mill Street," Cunningham said, adding later, when he was in his sister's house and his son was sitting in the van, Recinos issued the ticket. "Its not his job to stand on the corner and look pretty and walk up and down," Cunningham said, adding he has taken video of offending vehicles, measured and recorded distances from the curb of 17 vehicles, and noted there were five cars parked in violation as he spoke. When asked why he did not ticket an illegally parked Jeep on Mill Street or an illegally parked van on Acton Boulevard, Recinos said he'd "have to go and investigate," but made no move to do so.
