Ace Acton students honoured by Boards Some of the best, brightest and hardest working Halton District School Board students were honoured with awards at the Board's 28th annual celebration of Student Excellence last Wednesday in Oakville. Students were recognized for demonstrating outstanding qualities in more than one of the following areas: Academic, vocational, athletic, self-improvement, community work, citizenship or student leadership. One student is nominated from each school and students may only receive the honour once. "We welcome this opportunity to celebrate their success and to acknowledge the teachers, parents and community members who have helped these students in their achievements," said David Euale, the Board's Director of Education. The Acton area elementary and secondary school student winners are: Naomi Chang Robert Little PS Naomi is the kind of student every teacher dreams about. She always comes to school with a smile on her face, and she makes it her mission to cheer up those around her. Naomi is an active student who is involved in Everybody Dance Club, the Volleyball Team, Kindergarten Helpers and many more extra curricular activities at school. Yet she still has time to focus on her school work and ensure all her assignments and work are done on time, and to the best of her ability. Naomi is a role model for all our students and a true friend for her peers and the younger students in the school. Congratulations Naomi! Kaitlyn Howie McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS Kaitlyn Howie, a Grade 8 student from McKenzie-Smith Bennett Public School is the 2011/2012 Student of Excellence this year. Kailtyn is a strong academic student at MSB with a goal for not only self-improvement but school wide improvement as well. She is involved in the MSB community as an Office Helper, Morning Announcer and Breakfast Club Volunteer. Kaitlyn is also a valued member the Green Team, Drama Club, Me to We Club, Grade 8 Band, Photogr a p h y a n d Ye a r b o o k Club, and the Grade 8 Band. Corissa's exceptional citizenship skills provide a strong role model for others. Dana Bowman Acton District High School Dana Bowman is Acton High School's Student of Excellence for 2011-2012. Dana is a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities within the school community. Dana is a student representative for the Safe Schools Action Team and has been a leader of our student focus groups. As well, she is a Link Crew leader and is active in this year's school play, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Dana is an honour student who is known for her positive, upbeat attitude. HUFF & PUFF: More than 100 McKenzie-Smith Bennett School students staged a production of The Big Bad Wolf last Monday and Tuesday. The cast, crew and staff members worked for months to pull off a play that was charming and very upbeat. Submitted photo Catholic student awards Two exceptional Acton students were among those honoured by the Halton Catholic District School Board and its 24th annual Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony on April 30 in Oakville. At the celebration of Catholic Student Excellence, the Board honoured both the "Sharing The Spirit" Student Award of Excellence recipients (one per school) and its Special Education Advisory Committee's (S.E.A.C.) "Spirit of Inclusion" Award recipients (one for the elementary panel and one for the secondary panel). The local winners include: Nicole Walker double winner Christ the King Catholic Secondary School, Georgetown Nicole Walker's comm i t m e n t t o e q u i t y, dignity, and respect make her an excellent recipient of the Spirit of Inclusion Award. She believes all people have value and she has worked tirelessly to support inclusionary initiatives at the school and in her community. *** Walker also was awarded a Student Award of Excellence for embodying Catholic leadership qualities of equity, dignity, and respect, and she has worked tirelessly during her time at Christ the King to positively impact others. Elementary Recipient Tasha Gunasinghe St. Joseph School, Acton Gunasinghe showed her commitment to evolving as a global citizen through her involvement as a Social Justice Minister with the St. Joseph student parliament. She demonstrates a strong determination and positive outlook whenever volunteering to assist staff and peer and always does so with an exceptional level of respect and dignity.
