Angela's little white lie I lied to my daughter. Oh sure, I've fibbed here and there, like when I told her we were out of chocolate ice cream and there was almost a full tub of it in the freezer, but this was a full out planned lie. I wish I could say I regret it or that it was wrong, however it was the best thing I could do. Two Christmas' ago, I saw a giant Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer stuffed animal in Shoppers Drug Mart. A couple shelves below was a smaller version, or for use of a better term, Baby Rudolph. It was the first Christmas that Little J played with toys, and I couldn't resist them because they brought me back to my childhood. Of course, she could have cared less and was more interested in playing with the wrapping paper and boxes. Over the past year or so, Little J has had a few favourite dolls and stuffed animals. Last spring, it was her doll who she decided to name Pete, yes, Pete. Then there was her slight obsession with kitty-cats, another unknown since we have two St. Bernard dogs and neither the Dude nor I like cats. Then this Christmas, she discovered Baby Rudolph and they were instant buddies... B.F.F.'s without a doubt. After a few times of Baby Rudolph being misplaced, the Dude strongly suggested I find a spare Baby Rudolph and put him away in case she lost the original. I did that almost By TRUNK LOAD OF TREASURES: The Acton Trunk Sale kicks off it's 2012 season this Saturday May 19th at 8 a.m. in the Olde Hide House parking lot. Gates open for vendors at 7:30 a.m. - file photo Angela Tyler instantly after one night at bedtime, when Baby Rudolph went missing and after an hour of searching, and buckets of tears from Little J we finally found her BFF beside my truck in the driveway, cold, in a small pile of snow where she had dropped him when we returned from our outing. Since late last fall Baby Rudolph has been attached to Little J. He is there from sun up to bedtime. She wraps him in her favourite blanket, and she even pretends to change his pretend diaper just like I do to her brother. Of late, Baby Rudolph has even started to talk to a select few, and if you are a part of Little J's select group of VIP's, you will even get a kiss from her BFF. Then two weeks ago, disaster struck. Baby Rudolph's nose had developed some holes and needed to be fixed. There was no way to sew it so I got out my glue gun and did emergency rhinoplasty. It wasn't pretty, but I had her convinced it looked great. When the Dude saw it he said "You can't let her play with that...she sucks on his nose...its glue...go get the emergency one". I knew he was right but I didn't want to use the emergency one until Victoria Day Forecast 26° C 20% P.O.P it was a big emergency, like losing him. I told Little J her BFF needed a bath and we both put the original in the washing machine. While daddy distracted her I ran and got emergency one and swapped them in the washer. It was the fastest wash load ever. Five minutes later, I told her Baby Rudolph was washed and ready for her. As she reached in the machine and pulled out the replacement BFF, she looked at it and I jumped on the moment before she could think. "He looks great... doesn't he?" I insisted. With that she went on about how beautiful and soft he was. Of course, the Dude couldn't go along that easily. Testing the waters he said to her, "he looks as good as new" wondering if she would catch on that Baby Rudolph was an imposter. She was so pleased with how good he looked it never even dawned on her that it wasn't the same one. So I lied to my daughter. I took her favourite toy, changed it and gave her another one and told her it was the same one. Now, I'm being punished. I'm desperately trying to find a new emergency Rudolph. Every night I am searching the internet for the exact same one and even made several calls to many Shoppers, including head office with no luck. Do you know how hard it is to find a reindeer in May?
