Celina's home made, apple, lemon and carrot loaves are always a huge hit ­ Ted Tyler photo OYAP and Beyond: Four school boards form unique partnership to celebrate student apprentices Halton Catholic District School Board, Halton District School Board, The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, and the Peel District School Board will host the second annual `OYAP and Beyond', an evening of celebrating student apprentices, on May 31 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga from 6:30 - 8 p.m. This event is a critical link in the Ministry of Education's Student Success initiative, Learning to 18 , where the aim is to reach every student. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) allows students to acquire both apprenticeship hours and secondary school credits at the same time through Cooperative Education at secondary school. OYAP and Beyond is an opportunity to celebrate this important milestone for students and to acknowledge the valuable partnership between industry and education. These students have registered in one of the four sectors of apprenticeship (Construction, Industrial, Automotive and Service). A variety of employment agencies from Employment Ontario, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and apprenticesearch.com will be in attendance to meet with the student apprentices and discuss post-secondary pathways. The four school boards are expecting about 400 in attendance, including the student apprentices, staff and community members. OYAP and Beyond is timely, since recent labour market data indicates a shortfall in skilled workers in the trades. This event is an opportunity to promote apprenticeships within school communities and to help equip students with the necessary skills they require to meet demands in the job force. The lyrics from an old Simon and Garfunkel tune recently came to life at Acton Branch Library as local resident Lynn Hellinga taught babies and toddlers to talk with gestures. Baby signs allow hearing infants to ask for a drink or food or even to remark on what they see, all before they're ready to use their voices. American Sign Language for those with little or no hearing can also be explored through library DVDs, dictionaries, and guides. Signing is just one of the languages you can learn at the library. Children's books and adult novels and nonfiction are all available in French. When you're online, take a look at Santé en français , a health information database, Career Cruising ­ job hunters just need to press the français button ­ and news database CPI.Q , which includes 89 magazines that are either in French or French-English bilingual. A new collection of Spanish novels is just starting, including titles originally published in that language plus translations from English into Spanish. Mango Languages Learning Center, new to the collection in 2012, is a database that can be accessed from your home computer through the library's website. The software is easy, the lessons are fun, and the audio quality is excellent. "Mango" not only helps those just learning English, like ESL students, but also is a great tool for native English speakers honing another language. There are English courses for speakers of Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese ­ 15 in all. The same languages are available for English speakers to study along with idioms ranging from Scandinavia's Finnish and Norwegian to Asia's Tagalog, Thai and Hindi. Whether it's for work or travel, you have a choice of 38 of the world's major tongues. The most unusual language offered, though, is Pirate. Yes, that's Pirate, as in Captain Jack Sparrow, matey. The audio will ask, "How do you say, my friend?" and then you'll hear a "gentleman o' fortune" proclaiming, "Me hearty." Get your arrgh on! Whatever the lingo, let the library help you.
