THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 5 Conceptual drawing - Front view Bethel Christian Reformed Church continues to `Break down walls' Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Acton is well on the way of expanding the church facility. With the theme "Breaking Down Walls" it is our desire to make Bethel a shining light to the community of Acton to not only praise God, but to help our community as needed. We believed that one of the big challenges in serving Acton was the size or our building. Our plans of growing our church facility from a sanctuary of about 250 to almost 500 seats and adding additional class rooms is a step of faith to do God's will in Acton. With the activity happening around our church we are the talk of the town our hope is that even in the construction of our new church building we can point Acton to our ever faithful God. Fundraising was completed the end of 2011 and the building construction project was started in March 2012. During our regular site meetings with Hawkey Church Management (our construction manager) we can confidently say we are on schedule and budget to complete the building by the end of January 2013. The challenge is that we are only 2 months into the project and predicting the exact time and costing is still difficult. Since the beginning of our construction project on March 19, we have hit the ground running. With the site plan approved by the town and permits in hand, the walls were indeed Broken Down. Before that event took place, there was a major clean up done in every room and corner in this church. Coincidentally, it was March break and there were plenty of eager high school students who were happy to clean up the old building. Pews were moved and the interior wall was built and braced that week as well. Demolition of the front of the church was quick and if people in Acton didn't take notice of our church before, they certainly did now. Up to this point, we spent very little money. Skilled labour was volunteered and if we had to put a number on the cleaning, moving and demo, it would easily be in the tens of thousands. With the old foundation and walls out of the way, we dug a hole where the new church was going to be, and footing forms were placed. Right after the footings the foundation walls were formed and poured. Our call for help was answered with 19-20 volunteers showing up on 2 Saturdays to strip and clean forms. This saved 5 days total in time and thousands of dollars in labour. We are now in a phase where the contracted trades are starting. For example, the block layers are finished laying out the classroom walls, and structural steel is well underway. To keep the momentum going, our plan this past week will be the start of some basement renovations. They will dissect some plumbing and tear up some of the floor to make way for our new basement washrooms. This wasn't slated to start until October, but why put off for tomorrow what can be done today. We encourage everyone to go to our church website (www.actoncrc.com) and visit the link to view ongoing pictures of the construction project. Ontario Focuses On Further School Boards Savings Ontario will begin consultations to find ways to reduce administrative expenses, streamline services and find savings in the province's school boards to help preserve funding for the classroom. With enrolment down significantly since 2003 and projected to continue to decline in the coming years, Ontario needs to focus limited taxpayer dollars on the classroom rather than administration and back-office expenses. In consultation with education partners -parents, school boards, and teachers -- Ontario is hoping to find savings of $10 million in nonclassroom expenditures in 2013-14. "Our approach to this important discussion will not be driven by ideology, it will be driven by what makes sense. Our approach will not be driven by preconceived ideas, but instead by genuine consultation. We need to hear from our trustee, parent, teacher, staff and school board partners because they are local experts who know what makes sense for their communities." Says Laurel Broten Minister of Educatio Ontario has a history of working together with school boards to find savings and efficiencies in student transportation, library book purchasing and capital financing. Some school boards may want to look at amalgamating with a nearby board to reduce administrative and back-office expenses, allowing them to focus more resources on student achievement. Reducing administrative costs is just one of several steps the McGuinty government is taking to protect gains made in education while continuing to roll-out full-day kindergarten, maintain small class sizes and preserve 20,000 teacher and support staff jobs.
