12 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Thursday, July 12, 2012 SPORTS & LEISURE A 16-6 loss in Bowmanville Tuesday night to the Green Gaels of Clarington means the Halton Hills Bulldogs will have a lot more time off this summer than they're used to. After reaching the Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League finals and playing into August the past two seasons, the Bulldogs were swept out of the second round of playoffs 3-0 by the Gaels, who've lost just one game in 2012. The two rivals have met in the last six post-seasons and each team has now won three times. Clarington now moves on to face either Akwesasne or Oakville in the conference finals, while a veteran group of Bulldogs have played their final junior games. Captain Kody Lyons, Brendan MacDonald, Peter Laidlaw, Michael Licata, Chris Haynes and Justin Reid will all move on after lengthy careers here. `Dogs swept by Gaels "We had a great regular season (17-2-1) and every year this organization sets the expectation to win the Founders Cup, but we didn't achieve our goal and we're not satisfied," said six-year head coach Blaine McCauley. "Give the Gaels credit. We beat them two years in a row and they came at us hard this time. It seemed like in the first two games we played well in the first period but couldn't catch a break or two that should have gone our way. We don't make excuses and we're proud of this group." In game three Tuesday, the Gaels led 5-1 nine minutes into the contest and blanked the visitors 4-0 in the second period to put the result out of reach, going 6 for 6 with the man advantage. Brendan MacDonald (2), Jesse Copeland, Peter Laidlaw, Mike MacDonald and Haynes tallied for the Bulldogs, who were outshot 53-33 on the evening. First baseman Adam Montpetit of the Georgetown Tier II minor peewee Eagles was able to make the catch on a ball hit seemingly over his head during the opening game against Richmond Hill in a tournament hosted by the Georgetown Baseball Association last weekend at the Gellert Community Centre. The Eagles won this game behind some excellent pitching by Tyler Mosey, but dropped the next two to Royal York and Aurora by one run in each and didn't qualify for the semifinals of the 12-team event, which was won by a squad from Oakville. Blue Fins' club records toppled in Fox's wake The Halton Hills Blue Fins finished 26th out of 86 teams entered at the Swim Ontario Championships held in Nepean earlier this month. Next season, Swim Ontario is changing its format to festivals for competitors age 12 & under and age group championships for those 13 & over. Following are the results from the 2012 provincial meet: Matt Fox won the 100m & 200m backstroke events, posting the fourth fastest time in Ontario history for his age class in the 200m and an HHBF record with a time of 2:10.87. Fox also earned silver medals in the 100m & 200-m freestyle and bronze in both the 50m & 400m free, posting club records in each event. "Matt has been working hard on improving his weaknesses all season and any weakness that he still was totally unnoticeable in his 200m back on Sunday night. It's going to be a barn burner later this month in Calgary when he races Markus Thormyer of Vancouver for the national title," said Blue Fins' head coach Mike Thompson. Kyle Haas, recovering from non-swimming injuries, tied for gold in the 50m free and won the 100m backstroke. He placed second in the 200m back, fourth in the 200m IM and fifth in the 200m free, which was a significant HHBF club record. Haas will compete in Edmonton at Junior Pan Pac Trials later this month. The big surprise of the weekend was Aysia Leckie. Competing at her first provincial championships, Leckie continued major improvements by placing fifth in the 50m free, sixth in 400m & 800m free, seventh in the 100m & 200m freestyle. Aaron Brautigam was in fine form, bettering his times and placing eighth in the 100m breaststroke. Other Blue Fins who competed were Livy Olson, Loren Monhemius, Mitchell Krafczek, Bronte McMaster, Emma Fender, Brittany Dortona and Keri-Lyn Copeland.
