2 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Tuesday, August 28, 2012 Kelessi praises team for quick action Continued from pg. 1 Shields slipped into the water and assisted Kelessi to the boat where Dennis and another crew member helped get her out of the water. Onboard, Kelessi was barely conscious and her pulse was difficult to find. Dennis called for an emergency evacuation and the power boat raced back to Niagara-on-theLake where a waiting ambulance rushed Kelessi to hospital. Kelessi said in her email that she doesn't "remember too much after that (being pulled out) until the hospital." According to friend Amanda Dennis, doctors believed Kelessi was suffering from hypothermia but determined she had suffered a mild heart attack which caused her body to go into shock and her body temperature to drop drastically. The following morning doctors told Kelessi that the muscles around her heart had constricted so tightly that her heart had been unable to circulate blood throughout her body. "It's unfortunate what happened," said Kelessi. "No one expects their heart to give out on them at 22 years old in the middle of Lake Ontario. It's no one's fault and I had an amazing team of people around me. Colleen has watched over me and given advice all year. Kathleen is so important to me and I couldn't dream of a better coach." Kelessi was swimming the lake to raise funds for The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She managed to double her goal of $5,000 with donations still coming in. "I'll be in the hospital this week and they're (the doctors) are trying to figure out what type of damage I did to the heart," Kelessi said in her email. She is scheduled to start a full-time job next month as a special needs instructor at Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. CAO says new seniors' centres will require levy Continued from pg. 1 per cent of the tax levy. That guideline will be exceeded from 2016 to 2018 by 10.4 per cent because of the arena program. Perlin advises if council proceeds with the construction alternative for the Gellert and the Acton Seniors Centre it would begin in 2015 (construction of the Gellert in 2016-17 and of the ASC in 2018-19). Both would have to be paid for by a four-year 1.3 per cent Recreation Levy beginning in 2015. The debt limit would rise to 15.1 per cent by 2018. Another alternative is to pursue buy/ leasing/partnership with private companies. But it is likely the facilities would not be built until the 2020s. Perlin suggests that council could hold a special council meeting for local residents to air their views, use social media, set up an online survey or make it a referendum question on the 2014 municipal elections.
