Work crews with Stacey Electric, Halton Region's contractor, had the traffic lights operational at Ninth Line and Five Sideroad late Tuesday after a transport trailer inadvertently brought them down three weeks ago. The delay in fixing the lights angered many Halton Hills motorists and some politicians. Lights back on at busy intersection Continued from pg. 1 brought down a wood pole, two span wires and two traffic lights hanging from them. Van Ravens said it was an unfortunate accident that doesn't usually happen, because of the type of signal installation-- overhead lights hanging from span wires. She said the Region's emergency maintenance contractor, the Town of Oakville, immediately installed temporary four-way stop signs to maintain a safe operating intersection. Van Ravens noted while the intersection was safe, due to the volume of traffic, congestion resulted, leading to driver frustration. She has responded to many emails and phone calls from exasperated residents. She wasn't alone. Mayor Rick Bonnette told The IFP earlier this week that he was at his wit's end with the slowness of the Region to fix these lights. "There isn't a day that has gone by that the Ward (2) councillors or myself haven't heard from frustrated motorists," said the mayor. "This will be close to a month. Inexcusable. Maybe the Town should have fixed the lights and billed the Region." The repair delay resulted from Stacey Electric having to order materials (pole and wires), and getting utility locates before digging the new hole for the pole. Van Ravens said Halton Region is still waiting on the Halton Regional Police report and whether they can get compensation. "That's still to be determined," she said. "However our main focus was to get the signals up and running." According to Halton Region traffic count figures based on the last eight-hour count conducted on April 14, 2011: · the a.m. peak hour count was 1,042 vehicles north/south and 413 east/west. · the p.m. peak hour was 877 north/ south and 603 east west. · for the total eight hours: 6,140 north/ south and 2,769 east/west.
