26 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Thursday, September 20, 2012 Folk artist Karla Adolphe to perform Saturday at Norval United Church Acclaimed singer/songwriter Karla Adolphe will be giving a concert this Saturday, 7 p.m. at Norval United Church (486 Guelph St., Norval). Karla Adolphe's music has been featured on CBC's Vinyl Café radio show and on the American TV series "Heart of Dixie". The High River, Alberta musician is known in music circles as one half of the "Jacob and Lily" folk duo, and in worship circles for her work with the "Enter the Worship Circle" and "Emporiums" collaborations. Karla Adolphe will be performing songs from her new album "Honeycomb Tombs". This album explores various aspects of the grief journey, and stems from a personal experience of loss. About a year ago, Adolphe was privileged to be at the hospital when a dear family said goodbye to their daughter. In the midst of that beautiful and heart-wrenching day, she witnessed music play an important role in the early stages of grief. The songs she has written for Honeycomb Tombs have been inspired by personal stories, poetry and memoirs obtained from audience members and those connected to Adolphe's online community. Adolphe said she is hoping to bring hope and comfort to people who are travelling along the pathways of grief. Gaudeamus Choirs are looking eastward The Gaudeamus Choirs of Halton Hills, a three-level community choir program for ages 6-18, is welcoming new members for their fall season. This unique choral program combines small group vocal lessons with full choir rehearsals for an intimate vocal training experience. Singers meet for studio lessons with the conductor for the purposes of developing excellent vocal technique in a group lesson format. It is like private lessons and choral singing all in one program. Participants form close friendships with their fellow choristers, and also enjoy rehearsing in full choir rehearsals in preparation for twice annual concerts. Gaudeamus singers participate in outdoor retreats, and traditionally sing the anthems at a Blue Jays game each spring. The senior level of the choir, for ages 11 to 18, has recently received an invitation to participate in the prestigious Festival 500: Sharing of the Voices choir festival, taking place in St. John's, Newfoundland in July 2013. The biennial choral festival welcomes choirs from all over the world to share in song and celebrate our musical diversity. The choir is busy forming all the plans for this tour, and welcome new singers for the tour choir, as well as for the younger groups. There is also a boys division of the Gaudeamus choirs, including a changed voice group, and the choir is always looking for more boys who love to sing! New singers are accepted throughout September and October. To audition for the choir, please contact conductor Diane Murray-Charrett at 416-895-2697, or by email at gaudeamus@cogeco.ca.
