GOOSE GATHERING: These goslings stuck pretty close to mom while they enjoyed the sunshine and dandelions on the shore of Fairy Lake last week. Submitted photo Survey saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays.... If you're over the age of 40 and you hear the theme song to the television show Hogans Heroes, even if you haven't seen the show in years, I guarantee you will almost immediately and instinctively start whistling along with the song. Hogans Heroes was, a show that now might not have made it to the actual television schedule, as it might not be seen as politically correct. However, I see it as an original and a classic. Over the weekend, one of Hogans men, Richard Dawson passed away. Dawson is probably more known for being the host of Family Feud and Match Game. On Family Feud he was the host that kissed EVERY woman no matter what she looked like. On his last show during the first session he hosted, he said he kissed for luck and love, the same as his mother told him. After he passed, I saw a television interview clip on the Internet with him talking about some of his career memories. At first I didn't recognize him. He was certainly a lot older, had a lot more grey hair and got a By Angela Tyler little heavier, but as soon as I heard his voice with his calm manner and the intense focus on his story I was mesmerised again. I say again because in thinking back, over the years, certain actors, although they may not be top billing actors, have a way of entrancing me with their work and their presence. On Hogans Heroes the stories usually involved Hogan having some romantic fling in each 30 minute episode, but if you watched the other actors there was a much better story there. I was too young to watch it during its original run, yet I watched it for years after and even today if it is on during its decades of rebroadcast. If you haven't seen that show, I can guarantee you have at some point in your life watched Family Feud . I've watched the new version. I don't like it. I can hardly believe I've watched it on television since 1976. There have been different hosts of the show. There was only one that actually belonged in that position and that was Dawson. He always wore a three-piece suit with boutonniere and was never foul-mouthed or inappropriate. After he retired the first time, they brought him back again but it was too late. They had already changed things and the show's time and place were gone. I have a hard time with television and movies now. There is too much re-doing of old things. Very rare is the second run of something that is successful the first time a success the second time. Family Feud continues but it isn't the same. I hope they never re-do Hogans Heroes . I don't think they will because it had its time and place. Some things you shouldn't try to redo or change. I like watching Hogans Heroes in black and white. I like watching re-runs of circa 1978 Family Feud with its non-digital or computer enhanced set. I like watching actors like Richard Dawson. "Survey saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays.... Thanks Newkirk." RIP.
