THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 9 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF Hard work pays off: Trustee Rowe On behalf of the Halton Catholic District School Board, I would like to congratulate all graduates in our system this year. I would like to thank you for choosing Catholic education and supporting a system which has strived for excellence in all that we do. The Halton Catholic District School Board continues to lead the province in standardized testing. We are proud of the achievements of our students, thanks to the hard work of their parents and teachers. We will continue to offer an education that allows students to discover the gifts that God has given them, as they mature into caring citizens that contribute to their community. What an active year the students of St. Joseph's Catholic School enjoyed this year. Thank you to Mrs. Bien, Mrs. Lanois and all the staff for their work this year. Farewell to our friend and supporter Rev. Father Bob Bulbrook as he leaves Acton to serve another parish. The school will continue to work with the Parish of St. Joseph, Patron of Canada and with the parents of St. Joseph students, to keep the connections alive between home, school and parish. As summer holidays beckon, we let our minds relax for a welldeserved break, before we return to our educa- tion. Congratulations to the graduates of Acton and area. As you move forward on the road of life, just remember to always put your faith in the Lord, who is right there beside you. Sincerely, John Mark Rowe Acton Trustee Halton Catholic District School Board Meet Halton Hill's new public trustee - Alice Strachan I want to first express my excitement at being appointed the Halton District school Board Trustee for Halton Hills Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4. As a lifelong resident of Halton Hills (I was born in Esquesing Township, attended Speyside, Stewarttown and Georgetown District High School) it is a great honour to have been chosen. As you know the questions that were asked in the Trustee candidate interviews were a matter of public record. I thought it might be helpful for me to provide a summary of my answers as a way of introducing myself. "What is the most significant challenge or opportunity facing public education and how should the Halton District School Board prepare for it?" The challenge, as I see it, is to prepare all children and youth to become vibrant engaged members of the community. I have heard it said that we are now preparing and educating children and youth to be able to successful undertake jobs that have not even been created yet. I believe the challenge is to educate and support children to become confident in both what they know and in their ability to learn and grow. This does present us with an opportunity however to look at ways to excite our students about learning so they will be able and confident as they transition from school to career. Preparing for this will require open minds and the desire to be flexible while at the same time consistent and equitable to meet the needs of all. Please tell us about your most significant personal contribution to the Halton District School Board and how you would apply this experience as a member of the Board. What I bring to this role is a combination of community involvement, knowledge and skills relative to decision making, communication and change management and extensive involvement in HDSB activities. Most recently I was the Chair of the Field of Dreams Committee at Georgetown District High School. In that role I worked closely with many HDSB employees as well as numerous community partners. I have been Chair and Co-Chair of School Councils at Limehouse, Stewarttown and GDHS for multiple terms and I served on a number of HDSB committees including the original Parent Involvement Committee. What makes you stand out as the best choice to effectively represent the Halton Hills community as its Trustee? I have lived and learned in Halton Hills all my life and feel that I have a good understanding of our local needs and challenges. I look forward to working with the school communities in Acton and Georgetown and representing your needs and thoughts to the Halton District School Board.
