THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 15 Branch no. 197 Legion news By Sharon Graham P.R.O. Comrades, Saturday was our District horseshoes and you could not have asked for better weather. Everyone had a great day. In doubles, first place was Beachville, second place Waterdown, third place Erin and in forth was Acton. In singles, Acton took first, second and third. I am not sure who won in seniors. The barbeque staff sure worked hard to serve up a great meal for everyone. The entertainment on the patio was Cosmic Warehouse. Then we were all invited inside to hear another band Practically Hip . They were fantastic! What a way to end the night. Please remember Frank Single is looking for members to help with parking on July 1, for Canada Day. We will have the Acton Citizens Band on the patio at 7:30 p.m. If you are not doing anything on this evening, come out for the fireworks that start at dusk. The fire fighters put on a great show for everyone to enjoy. On August 18, we will have entertainment on the patio from 7 to 11 p.m., with the Tim Hicks band. To all students have a great summer. Ladies Auxiliary Notes The June meeting was held with 35 members present. Door prize was won by Janet Grant. This was our pot luck night and the food was excellent as usual. Ladies you out did yourselves. Thank you to Eileen Quackenbush for making the cakes in cele- bration of the Queen's Jubilee. Eileen you did an excellent job with the cakes as well as the table decoration. The two princess cakes were won by Fern Shultis and Cathy Munday, and you probably found it hard to cut into these cakes as they looked too nice to eat. Qualifying Round for Euchre was held in Oakville, and the Acton A team placed first so Betty Green, Norma Titus, Marg Haring and Phyllis Bunn will be going onto Districts in Mt. Hamilton on October 27. Congratulations ladies, and next year Acton will host the Qualifying Round for Euchre. Keep the following dates in mind and if you can help with the banquets. Please call Dolores to help serve and do dishes and Annamarie to help cook on July 7, 28, August 4, 18, 28 and September 1. Also ladies there is a bus scheduled to go to visit the Sunnybrook Vets on Sunday July 29. Please try to attend this as the Veterans look forward to seeing members of the LA. Our sincere sympathy goes out to the Dunn family in the loss of Marg's sister Heather. To all LA members have a safe and healthy summer and remember to volunteer your services over the summer as the banquet hall does not take a holiday. Experts say Nordic Pole Walking is more effective than regular walking as it increases cardio training and strengthens all muscle groups with one exercise. Acton firefighters allowed the fire to burn out. Lightening strike Acton firefighters responded to two calls about burning trees and downed hydro lines within five minutes of each other, just after 5:51 last Thursday in the area of Highway 7 and the Fifth Line. The first tree was hit by a lightening strike and firefighters extinguished the blaze. In the second instance, crews determined that the tree hit by lightening was not on fire, and firefighters stayed on scene until Halton Hills Hydro arrived to deal with the downed lines.
