THURSDAY, JULY 05, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 9 Free home fire safety program expanded The Halton Hills Fire Department will again conduct a free, voluntary home inspection program beginning July 16, to help homeowners make their homes safer from fire. Compared to this time last year, Ontario has seen a decrease in fire related deaths to 36 this year, down from 50 in 2011. While this is a positive statistic, even one fire death is unacceptable. Even with all the media, prevention and public education efforts by fire officials, there are still homes where fire safety issues exist, including inoperable or missing smoke alarms, improper storage or accumula tion of combustibles, and improperly constructed two-unit dwellings. To address these con tinuing concerns, the Halton Hills Fire De partment is expanding the "Home Safe Home Courtesy Fire Safety Inspection Program" to give homeowners simple but important fire safety tops. With the homeowners' permission, firefighters going door-to-door will inspect a home using a checklist specifically focusing on items such as smoke alarms, heating equipment, electrical, home escape planning and household hazards. Firefighters will also leave fire safety literature for the homeowner, and if any safety issues are found, firefighters will use this as an opportunity to educate the homeowner on corrective measures to alleviate the fire safety issue. During a Home Safe Home Courtesy Fire Safety Inspection pilot program last year in Acton and Georgetown, 465 homes were visited and a review determined it would be beneficial to continue and expand the program to the entire community. The 2012 program begins with the following streets in Acton; Long field Road, Churchill Road South, Westcott Drive, Roseford Ter race, Mowbray Place, Meadvale Road, Orville Road and Wynford Place. In Georgetown, the streets include Eden Place, Stockman Cres cent, Irwin Crescent, Airedale Court, Dawson Crescent, Sherman Court and Faludon Drive. If you would like a voluntary inspection done, call 905-877-1133 to arrange a visit.
