THURSDAY, JULY 05, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 15 wife Gerry. Ruth Burke gave me the list of winners for the Rama trip on Wednesday, June 27. Celebrating birthdays were Grant Greenaway and Tony Calluci. In the lucky seats were Marg Gouge, Karen Brozic, Eleanor Hughson and Art Tressel. The 50/50 winner was Rose Morrison. To help pass the time while travelling on the bus they are now playing Bingo one way. The bingo winners were Claire Landry, Eleanor Hughson, Pauline Barlow, Gerry Chafe and Marie Richardson. On Thursday afternoon while playing Bid Euchre Elma Braida had two mooners. Joan Morris passed away on Saturday, June 30. Joan and her late husband Vic were long time active members of the Acton Seniors Centre. Joan enjoyed hiking, social dinners, exercise classes, line dancing and trips and was an accomplished musician. The Centre will miss her enthusiasm for life. We would like to express our condolences to her family and care giver Mary Ann. $62.50 was the prize money at the weekly 50/50 draw. It was won by Helen Hore. By Julie Conroy On Wednesday, July 18 the Centre will be closed for the day due to work being done on the Hydro lines, if you are going to see Forever Plaid that day, it will not affect you. Don't forget that you will need I.D. for dinner at the Mandarin if you expect the seniors discount (65+). If you need somewhere sheltered to wait or use the washrooms you will be able to come in the main entrance of the arena and use their facilities. Is visiting China on your Bucket List? If there is enough interest the travel group will arrange for an afternoon presentation when you will be able to view a DVD and discuss the possibilities. It would be a 17-day tour. If you are interested please sign the sign up sheet. There has been some interest expressed in playing bridge one afternoon or morning a week. There is now a sign up sheet at the front desk. If you are unable to come to the Centre, please phone 519-853-5951 and ask the receptionist to add your name to the list. There is also a sign up sheet for Tai Chi. The computer course for basic beginners should start around mid- July. There is still room for a couple more people. If you are interested please let Wendy know. VOLUNTEERS HONOURED: At the Acton Seniors Centre Social Dinner on June 28, Mayor Rick Bonnette presented Jane McAllister, Dobbie Frizzell, Frances Hogenbirk, Elma Braida, and Shirley Broostad with volunteer awards for their many hours of volunteering at the Acton Seniors Centre. Julie Conroy photo Our MPP Reports by Ted Arnott MPP Wellington - Halton Hills On March 12, the McGuinty Government announced that it would end the Slots at Racetracks program, effective March 31, 2013. In the intervening weeks, the emotional response from all across WellingtonHalton Hills has ranged from shock, to alarm, to outrage. It is estimated that today the equine industry employs as many as 60,000 Ontarians. I have been told that the equine industry employs thousands of people in Wellington-Halton Hills. Unless the Government changes course, the livelihood of many of our neighbours is in jeopardy. Many in the industry do not have easily transferable job skills. While the Government has characterized the Slots at Racetracks program as a subsidy to the industry, our PC Caucus has expressed the view that the program is, in fact, a revenue sharing agreement. Here is how it has worked: when the slot machines were installed at the racetracks in the late 1990s, there was an agreement that the slots revenue would be shared with the horse racing industry and local municipalities. The Government has made a huge mistake by throwing the Slots at Racetracks agreement out the window. The decision to end the program was reached without meaningful public consultation and blindsided the industry. While I firmly believe that the Government must take immediate steps to get it's spending under control and to balance the budget, this should not include measures which would effectively eliminate the horse racing industry. To date, the Government has yet to release any assessment of the economic impact of its decision, something which I have publicly called upon them to do. I have raised this issue on a number of occasions in the Ontario Legislature. In recent months, I also attended a rally on the front lawn of Queen's Park to show my support for the equine industry. I have also visited Woodlands Farm near Hillsburgh to see first hand what the impact will be. I have met with and spoken to many of my constituents, and attended a public meeting hosted by Wellington County Warden Chris White to listen to the concerns of the community on May 29. On June 7, the Government announced that it will provide up to $50-million over the next three years to help the industry during this so-called "transitional" period. A consultation panel has been established to set up this fund. It is composed of three former Ontario MPPs, one from each party. I've served with all of them in the Legislature over the years and I hope that they will push back and stand up for the industry. The panel is accepting written submissions and I would encourage as many people as possible to make their voices heard. Now is the time. Submissions can be sent to horseracingtransition@ontario.ca I remain disappointed by the McGuinty Government's blatant disregard for the equine industry and I will continue to do whatever I can on this issue at Queen's Park. ****** Congratulations to Fred Helson and Jon Hurst! Fred and Jon were awarded Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medals on June 25, in recognition of their community service. I was honoured to join Mayor Rick Bonnette in presenting the medals, on behalf of the Governor General, the Hon. David Johnston. ****** Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott welcomes your comments. He can be reached at 1-800-2652366. His website address is www.tedarnottmpp.com One hundred and twenty people enjoyed the dinner and dance on Thursday evening. Acton Seniors Centre Co ordinator Wendy Krever welcomed everyone to the "Celebrating Seniors Month" dinner. Mayor Rick Bonnette mentioned that Celebrating Seniors Month was a great way of acknowledging all the seniors who volunteer in many areas during the year. He presented volunteer awards to Shirley Broostad, Dobbie Frizzell, Jane McAllister, Elma Braida, and Frances Hogenbirk. Bob Bruce was not able to attend, and will receive his award later.
