8 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2012 LATE DEATH DEATHS Township Digest Brucedale reno "Spartan," "utilitarian," and not a "Taj Mahal." That's how Guelph/Eramosa Township councillors described the major expansion of the municipal administration office in Brucedale. The existing building is so overcrowded that three top staff work out of a trailer in the parking lot. At its July 3 meeting, Council awarded the $1-million design/ build tender to Devlan Construction, which was selected after the tender from the lowest bidder was disqualified. The expansion/renovation will make the building fully accessible. Mayor Chris White said expansion talk began 10 years ago, and the first $2.3-million plan had all of the "bells and whistles," but it was scaled back to meet the municipality's needs. Construction should begin in early August and take 25 weeks. Special Council The public is invited to a special Council meeting on July 23 to deal with a planning application to allow a pet crematorium on Highway 24 in south/west Guelph/Eramosa Township. Crawford Transport Inc. /Pets Above Ltd. wants to provide cremation services for domesticated animals cats, dogs and horses and while staff said the application conforms to the rural industrial policies; concerns were raised at a recent Guelph/Eramosa Township Council meeting about possible odours and emissions from the facility. The applicant's experts are expected to be at the public meeting to answer any questions about Ministry of Environment compliance rules. Street party road closure Approximately 25 families in the Hampson Crescent area of Rockwood will enjoy their second annual summer soiree Township Council agreed to allow the closure of part of the Crescent on July 28 from 2 to 11 p.m., for a street party in the newer subdivision in the south-east part of the village. In approving a special event permit application to close a Township road, Councillor Doug Breen called the street party "fantastic" and said he hoped more people in different areas of the community would follow suit. When questioned about the insurance requirements a $5-million policy covering the Township, Breen said, "Theoretically, if they have a hootenanny that breaks into a hoe-down, and somebody twists an ankle falling off a curb, theoretically, they could sue us." Staff said the insurance coverage would cost the organizers approximately $300. INDIAN TRAIL: A trail/pathway linking Rockwood and Eden Mills the Indian Trail was officially opened recently by Guelph/Eramosa Township Mayor Chris White (right) and landowner Francis Golightly-Burns, who with her husband Alan Burns, allows the public to use the trail on part of their property. Submitted photo Organizers of the street party agreed to be responsible for traffic and crowd control, barricades, safety precautions and any cleanup required. Everyone cooks their own food and the day's events include games, entertainment and an out-door movie for the kids. Plaque and thanks cash The Rockwood Lions Club will receive $200 from Guelph/Eramosa Township's Trails/Environment Committee in appreciation for their help with the recent opening of the Indian Trail, a path/walkway connecting Rockwood and Eden Mills. The Lions Club provided the refreshments at the opening. Guelph/Eramosa Township Council also recently approved a $500 grant to the Heritage Committee to relocate a plaque, commemorating the settlement of the LaGuaryans, to the Marden Community Centre from the River Run Centre in Guelph. The LaGuaryans, a group of Scottish settlers who initially settled in South America, asked to return to Scotland, but were refused and instead ended up in what is now Guelph/ Eramosa in the Marden area. Fire ban Hot and dry weather prompted Wellington officials to issue a total outdoor fire ban for the County, including Guelph/ Eramosa Township. As of last Friday, all open air fires any fire outside of a building, including bonfires, campfires, burn barrels, outdoor fireplaces/chimneys or any other fires set in open air are prohibited. The ban is in place until further notice. · 1-178 Alma Street. Rockwood, ON N0B 2K0 Tel: (519) 856-1221 Fax: (519) 856-1260 ARE YOU HURT OR IN PAIN?? Physiotherapy can help! Therapy can help! His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Bern had touched in some small way throughout his full and very memorable life. Bern is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Georgina and his sons Rick (Laurie) and Steve (Gina) He will be missed by his grandchildren: Nathan, Justin (Sherri), Geoff (Monica), Aaren, Sierra and Sydney as well as his great-grandchildren: Skyla, Mike, Joe and George and his brother Donald. Bern's life would seem too short to his family, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. From his humble start on the farm in Ash, he spent a short time in Hamilton then on the farm again in the Milton area. He established roots in the Acton area and retired to Lindsay and then Guelph. His leadership, his dedication to family and love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought so much joy to his family. Although he went quickly, he gave his family courage and hope and the reminder that life is precious. He gave tirelessly at his work at Beardmore's and loved serving his community as a fireman and as a District Chief. He was a leader of men. Bern's family will receive friends at the MacKinnon Family Funeral Home, 55 Mill Street East, Acton on Thursday, July 12th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friends are invited to meet the family at Trinity United Church, 70 Mill Street East on Friday, July 13th at eleven o'clock where the funeral service will be conducted by the Rev.
