12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2012 Branch no. 197 Comrades, Last Sunday was our Zone summer social held in Oakville at Branch 114. What a great afternoon. The weather was great and even the sun showers did not dampen the day. There were lots of members from all of our Zone Branches, out to have a great time. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than a visit to Sunnybrook to see the veterans. They laid down their lives so we Legion n ews By Sharon Graham P.R.O. could live ours in this free country. On July 27, there will be a barbeque from 6 to 8 p.m. The crew will be serving hamburgers, sausages and fries for $5 so come on down for a nice dinner. AJ was only 20 years old. We were devastated. He was a good son, a precious gift received from God. Allen loved life and had so much to look forward to. All hopes and dreams were shattered by a drunkard who in his stupor decided to drive his truck that day. Several weeks ago my wife's 42 year old cousin (Martin Vrijenhoek) went to work and was injured in a freak accident. They rushed him to hospital and 24 hours later he was pronounced dead. ALLEN KEITH VRIJENHOEK (AJ) & MARTIN ALEXANDER VRIJENHOEK In Memory of Martin Alexander Vrijenhoek When loved ones die, we are reminded how fragile life is and that we all have an appointment with death. Everyone will one day be numbered among the ultimate statistics: 10 out of 10 people die. Every day, over 155,000 people will pass from this life to the next and then face judgment. Some people seem unconcerned about death because they think it is the end. It isn't. Death is the beginning of an everlasting life, a life of total happiness, or a life of total misery. The mind of man doesn't stop functioning when his body does. We --- all of us --- have a second appointment, an appointment as unavoidable as death: an appointment with our maker and judge, an appointment with God. How will you spend eternity? Here are some questions to help us understand our destiny. Have you ever lied or stolen (regardless of value)? Have you ever used God's name in vain, or had sexual thoughts about someone? Have you ever hated someone? The truth is that if you said yes to those questions, on Judgement Day God will see you as a lying thief, a blasphemer, an adulterer, and a murderer. Jesus said, "Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart," the Bible also says that if you hate someone, you are a murderer. This is the Bible's warning -- if God gives you justice on Judgment Day, you will end up in Hell. You are a criminal, condemned to death, and you are standing before the Judge. If you offer Him money, religious works, good deeds, etc. you are adding an attempt at bribery, to the list of your crimes. Nothing you can do can save you from His wrath. The Bible says there is another way to be saved: "For by grace are you saved throught faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9) Eternal life is a free gift of God (see Romans 6:23). He made a way for you to be forgiven: "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus suffered and died on the cross, taking the punishment for your sins. Then He rose from the dead and defeated death. If you repent (turn from your sin) and trust in Him, He will forgive you and grant you eternal life. Pray something like: "Dear God, please forgive my sins (name them). I turn from them and trust Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savious. In His name I pray. Amen." Start by reading the book of John in the Bible.
