THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 9 New tricks at Town skate board camp Boys and their boards By tomorrow (Friday) Acton's Alex Allen hopes to land a Boneless 180 Big Spin at the Town's Skateboard Mania camp at the Acton skate park, beside the arena. A l l e n , 1 4 , c a me c l o s e t o landing the trick on Tuesday almost getting his feet to spin 180 degrees while his skateboard spins 360 degrees. With dogged determination, Allan practised and practised at the only skateboard camp offered in Acton this summer. An earlier scheduled Town camp was cancelled due to lack of interest. After running through the safety and skateboarding etiquette in the morning, two leaders and two volunteers assessed the skills of the nine boys whose parents paid $127 to sign them up for the course, and then it was out at the skate park. For Michael Gillis, 12, the camp is a chance to learn how to "land new tricks." He attacked the quarter-pipe on Tuesday and said even without the camp, he would skateboard "everyday of the week, if I can." The camp wraps up tomorrow (Friday). BONELESS 180: By tomorrow (Friday) Acton's Alex Allan, 10, hoped to land a Boneless 180 Big Spin, a trick he was learning at the Town's Skateboard Mania camp at the Acton skate park. On Tuesday, he was close to spinning 180 degrees while his board flipped 360 degrees. Frances Learment photo Congratulations to you all. Just a reminder there will be entertainment on August 11 from 3 to 7 p.m., with the Falcons on the patio. The Lorne Scott's will be visiting the Branch in the afternoon. We will be having a barbeque as well, so why not come out and enjoy the afternoon and evening. QUARTER-PIPER: Acton's Michael Gillis, 12, was learning new tricks as the Town's Skateboard Mania camp at the Acton skate park on Tuesday. He wants to master the quarter-pipe. Frances Learment photo the annual Gary Munday fishing derby and family fun day on August 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come out and help the kids fish. There will be lots of fun games plus a barbeque. Boy, it is hard to imagine that in three weeks the kids will be back in school. Our summer seems so short. At least the weather has been on our side. We are even getting a bit of much needed rain to help the grass and plants. Branch no. 197 Legion news By Sharon Graham P.R.O. Comrades, These last few weeks the weather has been so hot. It is a bit of a relief that this week the temperature will be a bit cooler. We were saddened to hear of the death of one of our members, Marshall Lomax on Sunday, August 5. We offer our deepest sympathy to his family for their loss. Branch 197 received six tickets to CAShh's tribute show at the arena today (Thursday) for their sponsorship and drew members' names so the winners could attend the concert with a guest. The winners are Sue Sheehan, Darlene Jordan and Ivan Kilby. The barbeque will start later in the afternoon after 4 p.m. The Leathertown Festival is August 12 and we are looking for volunteers to help with our booth. If you can help us out it will run from 12 to 5 p.m. On August 18, there will be entertainment on the patio with Bruce Hare from 3 to 8 p.m. You are all invited to ACTON HOCKEY and SKATING SCHOOL Registration For Ages 4 to 9 years AT ACTON ARENA Sat., August 18th 9 am until full www.actonhead2toe.com For more information contact Mark Duval 519-855-6572 or JIM JAMES 905-877-8339
