4 EDITORIAL with Frances Learment THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2012 Latitudes and attitudes No alarm clock, the steady slap of Lake Erie on the shoreline and the lure of three ports Port Stanley, Bruce and Port Burwell and a cottage with satellite TV to watch the Olympics. A couple of Olympic notes: · Who designed the creepy one-eyed Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville which have taxi lights on their heads and eyes meant to be cameras? As a firm believer in "a change is as good as a rest," I set out to have both last week a vacation break from the everyday when the only thing written was a short shopping list more ice, daily newspaper, worms for fishing a bliss-filled week without deadlines. · Now I know what I'd look like competing at the Olympics in badminton. At my best, I could have given the four women's doubles teams from China, South Korea and Indonesia, a run for their money as they were expelled from competition for intentionally playing badly to try to get a more favorable draw in the next round now there's fair play and sportsmanship. Thumbs Up · To Ottawa for delaying the death of the penny until after RETURNING TREATS: Trophy Nuts will be back at the Acton Farmers' Market a few more the busy holiday season. Merchants were worried stopping times this season. The company's distinctive marketing including the old Chevy and summer circulation of the one-cent coin this fall would cause Christmas student Emily O'Brien - were hit with shoppers last Thursday. Ted Tyler photo cash register chaos. · To the Acton BIA for again organizing the annual Leathertown Festival on Sunday a chance to celebrate summer and have some downtown fun, food and entertainment. Looking Back Ten Years Ago · Ten-digit dialling came to the 519 area code. All local calls to 519, 905 and 289 now require the area code and seven-digit phone number. · The Acton home of Paul and Joanne Bissonnette on Main Street North was judged the overall winner in the residential category of the Acton BIA's Communities I Bloom competition. Five Years Ago · Steady, but slow. That's how the $1.3-million reconstruction of Main Street is going as crews replace the sanitary sewers from Knox Street southerly to the entrance of Superior Glove. · Acton's Shane Waite, chef at the trendy Cru restaurant in Toronto, was named one of the top 10 Toronto chefs- noted for his passion, drive and common sense. Imported bike stolen To the editor, On July 23, I rode my bike to see my friend at his new house in Tanners Drive. My pal and I had a great time riding around and then it was time for supper, so I left my bike in their driveway between the family's cars. Having eaten supper and watched a movie I went outside (at 10 p.m.) to return home on my bike. Alas, it had been stolen, along with my helmet. My bike, a silver 21-gear Specialized Junior Extreme, is odd as I got it in England and the front brake is on the right and rear brake on the left these settings are reversed on bikes sold in Canada. So should you see a rider getting very wrong with the brakes please let me, or the police know. I use my bike to deliver newspapers.
