Submitted photo Teen takes five checkered flags Rockwood Rebel Red wrap By Frances Learment With five wins in eight starts on the season and leading in points, Rockwood's Ryan Fraser will likely be named Rookie of the Year in the Hurricane Midgets Racing Club. The confident yet modest teen had a chance to meet fans and talk about his racing at the recent Leathertown Festival when he parked his car in front of the Mill Street offices of one of his sponsors, Acton Optical. Fraser, 15, credits his dad for getting him started in racing, first in go-carts and then in Hurricanes sprint style or cars that look like Can Am Midgets, with a 440-cc snowmobile engine. "My dad used to race these cars and knows the setup very well and that's the main reason," Fraser said pointing to his Number 94 Hurricane car and adding, "I'm a really good driver." "I've been racing go-carts at Flamborough Speedway since I was nine and I think that really gives me an advantage over some of the other guys," Fraser said. "I like racing and I like winning and its fun." Fraser races at six locations in Ontario, including back-to-back races on the weekend at Barrie, and then Peterborough Speedways. up an impressive season In a summer where there was hardly a drop of water, it was surprising and challenging for both teams and organizers, to be faced with five straight days of rain for the weekend of the Squirt Boys ISA Softball Championship. For the second year in a row, Rockwood hosted the eight team tournament, and the first ranked Rockwood Rebel Red played their hearts out in a highly anticipated final game against the second ranked Minto Crush from Palmerston. Hollywood screenwriters couldn't pen a better script. Every meeting between these two teams this season was a tight one. It was understood that this final game would, as always, be a game of strategy and smart plays, and hopefully a little bit of luck in capitalizing on opposition errors. But those errors were few and far between for both sides, and at the end of the Acton Indoor Soccer Adult Entertainment! Starts September 23rd 2012: Register now! International tie breaker rule of starting the next "do or die" inning with a runner on second was put in effect, and Rockwood scored that runner, putting them ahead by one going into the bottom of the eighth. But sadly, it was not to be for the Rebels this season. Palmerston scored not only their runner, but one more, thus clinching the championship and bringing an end to a very memorable season. The Rebel Red family, friends, and fans were treated to some excellent fastball. You gave us all something to cheer about, and each and every player should be extremely proud of their personal accomplishments throughout the year, as well as that of the entire team. Without a doubt, it was the most exciting game of the summer. Here's to many more next season.
