14 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY,SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 Rockwood doctor, and soybean innovator honoured with Queen Diamond Jubilee Medals A local physician, one of a "dying breed" who did much more than just care for the ill, and an innovative leader in Canadian agriculture were honoured with Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals at the Guelph/Eramosa Township council chambers last Tuesday. Rockwood area physician Dr. Dr. Jane Hosdil and Peter Hannam, a Canadian Agricultural Hall of Famer, accepted the medal commemorating the Queen's 60th anniversary on the Throne from Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott, on behalf of the Governor General. Arnott explained he's asked municipalities in the provincial riding to suggest worthy recipients. Some 60,000 medals are being awarded Canada-wide. Guelph/Eramosa Township Mayor Chris White read short biographies of the recipients, detailing why they had been selected, and noted that without Dr. Hosdil's work, the new Rockwood Medical Centre project, which attracted new doctors, might not have been built. Dr. Hosdil said it was a privilege to serve Rockwood for over 40 years, many of them as the only doctor, but during planning for the medical centre she "spent some nights, prior to that, wondering if I would have to run away first, and then retire." She said the additional physicians allowed her to "slow down" and stay involved. "This is indeed a great JUBILEE RECIPIENTS: Rockwood physician Dr. Jane Hosdil and soybean expert Peter Hannam (second from right) received Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medals last Tuesday from Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott (left) and Guelph/Eramosa Township Mayor Chris White, on behalf of the Governor General Frances Learment photo honour...I've enjoyed being in Rockwood it has been a privilege," Dr. Hosdil said as she accepted the award which praised her commitment to improving the quality of life in Rockwood and East Wellington. Through her work with the East Wellington family Health Team, local residents have more access to health care professionals, including nurse practitioners, nurses, dieticians and mental health professionals. Mayor White introduced recipient Peter Hannam as an innovative leader in Canadian and local agriculture who started and grew First Line Seeds into one of Canada's largest soybean seed suppliers, and helped position the soybean as Ontario's largest field crop. Showing leadership with education and youth, Hannam and his family fund research at the University of Guelph, and he created a youth soybean contest to develop innovative soybean uses. Saying thank you, Hannam noted that it is "particularly encouraging when local people recognize what you've done, or what other people have done, and so I appreciate that very much," Hannam said. MPP Arnott thanked Council for its input into suggested recipients, said both Dr. Hosdil and Peter Hannam were being honoured for their outstanding work in the community, and far beyond. Rockwood Councillor Doug Breen recounted personal ties to both recipients, remembering Dr. Hosdil's involvement in the births of his two kids, and also the potent painkiller she provided during a kidney stone attack. "I can't thank you enough for what you've done for us as a community, and also me personally, over the years," Breen said. Breen also recalled how 30 years ago Hannam had been a guest speaker in his Crop Science class at the University of Guelph, and had been introduced as "the most important soybean grower in the world." The Governor General's office said the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country, and also honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. Hunting survey Are you a hunter, or landowner in Wellington County who allows hunting on your land? If so, Christine Porterfield, a Masters student at the University of Guelph would like to speak with you for her thesis. Porterfield, of Rockwood is studying the relationship between hunters and landowners and also looking into rural identity: how hunting contributes to a sense of community in rural places, why hunting is significant to the hunter. She is looking for between 20 and 25 participants who must be over 18, and if they hunt, a valid hunting licence is required. "I hope to find that there is a strong relationship between hunters and landowners," Porterfield said, adding participants' interviews will be digitally recorded and they will each receive a $10 gift certificate from Tim Hortons.
