THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 15 By Julie Conroy What a busy spot the Acton Seniors Centre was on Monday morning when I walked in. People who hadn't seen each other over the past few weeks were catching up on what they had done, and the darts and craft ladies were welcoming new faces. It was great to see Donna back from her extended summer vacation welcoming people at the travel desk. They have great trips planned for fall and winter. I hope you managed to take advantage of some of the programs offered at the Open House at the Acton Seniors Centre this week. Next week, we will be back to our regular programs. New this fall is Bridge on Thursday afternoons. We hope some of the Bridge players will come out and play, if that day turns out to be inconvenient for Bridge players perhaps an alternative day and time can be arranged. Now the children are back in school and not using the community hall for summer programs, we are able to hold our weekly Friday lunches in the community hall which is great, as there is room for the volunteers to serve everyone without bumping into people. The lunch on Friday, September 21 will be butternut squash soup and sandwiches, followed by desert, tea and coffee. Please make sure your name is on the lunch list by 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for lunch the following Friday. You can just phone in and the receptionist will add your name to the list, (or take it off if there is a problem.) Friday lunch is a great way to meet new people. Don't forget Bingo starts at 1 p.m. on Fridays. On Tuesday, September 4 only six people braved the much needed rain to enjoy the movie. The next movie on Tuesday, October 2 is Marigold Hotel, a comedy drama. Would you consider retiring in India? You can tell fall is in the air when the Program committee is busy organizing the Fall Fashion Show. This year it will be on Tuesday, October 9 at 2 p.m. You will see the latest in colour, style, and wearable fashions from Alia in Milton. Celebrating a birthday in September? Our Birthday Tea will be on Tuesday, September 18 when we celebrate August and September birthdays. It's great to see Faye Pink back on Fridays after her extended stay in hospital, and Betty Green made a short visit to the Centre on Friday morning. We hope all our members who are under the weather make complete recoveries. We miss them. The Centre would like to offer their condolences to Sue Robbins. Her husband Keith passed away last week. He enjoyed coming to the social dinners once a month. Oops, I goofed again. I am sorry to say that Steve Townsley did not win the 50/50 last week, and there was no winner this week, so the prize money on Friday should be just under $200. PAWS TO READ: Acton's Jacob Stubbington, 10, read to Kola, a junior champion Shiloh Shepherd, at the Acton library on Saturday during a meet and greet with Anne Abes, a volunteer with Therapeutic Paws of Canada. Anne and Lola will be back at the Acton branch, beginning October 11, to offer Paws to Read, a program for reluctant readers in Grades one through five.
