THURSDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2012 THE NEW TANNER ROTARY SUPPORTS HANDS UP: This dusty field in Cameroon, Africa is being turned into a sports filed for local youths, thanks to funds raised by the Rotary Club of Acton. Submitted photo be setting the ladies hearts beating a little faster when he sings some old and new favourites. A great way to keep fit and enjoy the music is to join the line dancing group. They started a couple of weeks ago and will dance every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., until December 27. This is open to guests also. Come out and learn The Slosh, Boot Scooting Boogie and Electric Slide among other dances, or share some of the dances you know. Last Monday morning, Frances Hogenbirk was in fine form. Not only did she throw the winning dart October 18 there is a blood donor clinic in the main hall. Maybe you have not given blood before and might be your first time. It is very much needed by all of the community. It is just a pint, and does not take too long to give and that might save a life. Our winter mixed darts are starting on Tuesday, October 9. Sign up is 7:15 p.m. Start playing 7:30 p.m., sharp. Format is a blind draw, you have a different partner every week. The cost is $2 per week and you don't have "Hands Up" is a comprehensive, integrated program to give a hand up to the citizens of Cameroon, Africa by helping them to help themselves. The program is run by a group of 22 mostly small Rotary Clubs, and its purpose is to afford small clubs the opportunity to pool their resources to fund projects in Cameroon. The Rotary Club of Acton joined this group in 2010. The funds that they The Rotary Club of Acton and its work in Cameroon contributed in that year helped build a recreation center in the community of Kumbo. In 2011 the Rotary Club of Acton was named the sponsor club of a second project in Kumbo, whose scope will consist of the following: · Developing an ac cessible sports field for the youth community. · Building an access ible washroom at the field. · Building a road to the above. · Providing water to the washroom, and to seven local communities. By working together with other Rotary Clubs, Rotary District 7080 and Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Acton has gathered the necessary funding together and forwarded it to where it is needed. The work is in progress and they hope to see it finish on schedule, this year. 11 By Julie Conroy The Centre will be closed on Monday, October 8 when we celebrate Thanksgiving. It's a busy week at the Centre next week starting on Tuesday, October 9, with our Fall Fashion show. Our models will be wearing fashions from the Alia store in Milton. The Alia Fashion line is very wearable and suitable for all ages and sizes. Come out and see what the latest colours and styles are for Fall and Winter. On Thursday, October 11 we will be celebrating a belated Thanksgiving social dinner with ham, scalloped potatoes and corn on the cob, followed by either apple or pumpkin pie. Acton's favourite crooner Monty Greg will in three games, but in the final game she won with a bulls eye. Needless to say there was lots of excitement. If you enjoy playing darts, please come and join them Mondays at 9:15 a.m. At Bid Euchre on Thursday, September 20 Ruth Burke had the only mooner. Last Thursday there were no mooners. The trip to Rama was on September 26. Gerry Chafe won the birthday prize. Marg Gage, Marlene Daziel and Donna Boyko were in the lucky seats. The 50/50 was won by Claire Landry. Make sure you mark your name on the donation list. Jill Morris was at the Centre on Wednesday morning with her son Josh and her husband Keegan. The Wednesday morning exercise group were placing two leaves in memory of her mother Joan. Josh climbed the ladder to place one and Eileen Dix the other, with the exercise class looking on. Mary Ann Peteros (Joan's care giver) also the bartender know so you can make the necessary changes. The Branch will be open on Thanksgiving Monday placed a leaf in memory of "Her dearest friend and mom in Canada." On a sad note, Betty Lockerbie passed away on September 27. We have lost another long time, dedicated member who baked squares and made mountains of cookies for various fund raising events. She always enjoyed the Friday lunches and bingo. The Centre would like to extend their sympathy to her family on the passing of a very special lady.
