12 Dozers win three-pitch crown in Rockwood Another successful season for the Rockwood Men's Three Pitch League came to a close this past weekend with the crowning of a new league champ, the Dozers. They added this honour to their first place finish during the regular season. In the final, the Dozers gave the always tough Grey Sox a very uncharacteristic shellacking, beating them 34 to 17. The young guns of the "not so" Grey Sox had already beaten the more chronologically-challenged Dozers earlier in the round robin stage 13 to 7. They were also going into the final undefeated in their first five games. However the underdog Dozers took the early lead and continued to out distance the Sox with every passing inning. Especially damaging was the second where they scored 13 unanswered runs. Co-captains Roy Garbotz and Ken Rodd of the Dozers said that it was a true team effort with everyone on the squad coming up with big hits and solid defensive plays. In the B Championship, the surprising Highwaymen were able to redeem themselves from a mediocre season by beating the Spare Parts squad 23 to 14. It also marked their first league championship of any kind since the inception of the team. Captains Walter Hanley and Peter Restelli were thrilled with the honour and cited all their team mates for "playing hard despite various THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY,OCTOBER 04, 2012 injuries and coming up big when they needed it most". The Spare Parts team did mount a spirited last inning comeback attempt but it was a case of "too little, too late." "The last few years have been nothing short of miserable weather-wise so this was a Godsend. I would like to thank all the teams for their sportsmanship and congratulate everyone for a great year end tournament," said President and Highwaymen manager Jim Monaghan. Monaghan also acknowledged the umpires, scorekeepers and especially groundskeeper Dave Baillie who helped make it a success. The league banquet is October 27, at Rockmosa Community Center.
