6 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2012 On Tuesday, October 16 we will be inviting new members to a light lunch and introduce them to their 2012 board members. This is their chance to meet new people, ask questions and find out what the Centre has to offers them. Last week we counted how many leaves are on our Looking to the Future wall. These are placed in memory of friends, family members, to commemorate special events in your life, or just because. There were 137 leaves. Each leaf represents a donation of $50. Our fundraising Halloween Dance is on Saturday, October 27 in the Community Hall. You will enter through the Acton Seniors Centre. There will be music and a cash bar (beer or wine) plus coffee, tea and pop. We will have refreshments later in the evening, and there will be prizes for the best costumes. Come out and enjoy the evening. If you don't dance you can still enjoy watching the dancing, listening to the music, and checking out the costumes. Tickets are available at the Centre Monday to Friday from 9 a.m., to 3:.45 p.m. For more information call 519-853-5951. The Tuesday afternoon movie was a great success. I see the new carpet has arrived for the carpet bowlers. I am sure that will make them very happy and improve their games. They play on Monday mornings at noon, so now they can play two games at the same time. On Thursday afternoon, while playing Bid Euchre Roberta Thompson, Bernie McMillan and Shirley Hunter all had mooners. This Friday the lunch is Sheppard's pie, and on Friday. October 19 the soup will be Hearty Beef soup, sandwiches and desert. The weekly 50/50 was not won again this week so the prize money should be around $500. To mark the importance of Fire Prevention Week, Hydro One is reminding your everyone to take actions around the home that could help prevent an electrical fire. ·Keep electrical cords away from heat and water as they can both damage the insulation and create a shock hazard. ·When you're changing a light bulb, be sure to turn off the switch or circuit. ·Put safety caps on any unused electrical outlets, especially if there are young children in the house. ·Inspect cords and plugs. Make it part of your routine prior to using a tool or an appliance. Replace electrical cords that have been cut, broken or cracked insulation and remember to pull the plug, not the cord to extend the life of the cord itself. ·Avoid octopus outlets. Clusters of wires and plugs can be a fire hazard along with using extension cords as permanent wiring. These products were never meant to be used that way so consider up-dating the wiring in your home. ·Buy appliances approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and always disconnect small appliances before cleaning them. ·If you're renovating this fall, remember all electrical work must be inspected and approved by the Electrical Safety Authority. This inspection must be done prior to covering any wiring with drywall or any other wall/ceiling materials. ·Have a qualified electrician look at your electrical supply, panel and wiring to determine what alterations or additions will be required for your renovation and make arrangements for an electrical inspection. ·In the market for a new home this fall? Then an electrical inspection should be high on your list prior to signing on the dotted line. Not only do you want to ensure that the home is safe but you also want to know upfront if up-dates to the home's wiring are required to bring it up to code.
