Acton High School honors top students The natural talent of top Acton District High School students was recognized and honoured recently at the school's annual Academic Achievement Awards. With the awarding of 80-some subject awards for the top students in each course, and 152 Honour Society members students who achieved an average of 80 per cent or higher in each semester last school year it was night to be proud of the teens, and to thank their parents, family and teachers for their necessary support and guidance. In her welcome, Principal Darlene White said along with the students' natural talent and passions, their achievements were a result of a variety of factors including, "initiative, curiosity, work ethic, time management, independence, team work and self-reflection." White praised the students for being good citizens and for showing what it means to be part of a community. She said while some question the commitment of today's youth, she knows at first hand that youth today are more involved in world issues and social issues than ever. "They care deeply about the environment, social justice, and world conflict and are better equipped than any other generation to not only voice their opinions, but transform these opinions into action," White said, adding the students demonstrate leadership, generosity and good judgement. The consistent effort and positive attitude displayed by student Sarah Scott, in Grade nine last school year, earned her the Jody Larson Achievement Award, named for a former Instructional Assistant at Acton High. The overall top male and female students last school year those who achieved the highest average for both semesters were Alex Armstrong and Michael Jones in Grade nine, Jordan Lenz and Robert Bohlken in Grade 10, and Julia Field and Nicholas Hansen in Grade 11. The award winners received a certificate and cheque 38 local businesses donated approximately $4,000 for the cash awards. Graduates hold Commencement The following night, October 5, last year's graduating class returned to Acton High School for its Commencement a night of joyful reunions, proud parents and an atmosphere of promising futures.
