THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2012 THE NEW TANNER Township Digest a Toronto decision, but hers, based on mis-use of the board that looked "unprofessional." "It's not a public board we are a business," she said, adding she'd had com plaints about the look of the board from visitors to the branch, including a regional vice-president. Porterfield said she relocated the community board inside the branch it can be seen from the entry area after regular business hours and now she vets each submission to ensure it supports the community and does not look "junky." She said some people misused the board putting their notices on top of others or pinning it to the wall if the board was full and used it for personal sales, not community events that 13 `Bohunk' bulletin board relocated It was a local, not a Toronto head office decision to remove the community bulletin board from the vestibule of the Rockwood RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) branch. At a recent Guelph/Eramosa Township council meeting, Councillor Doug Breen, unhappy with the removal, said, "RBC in Toronto decided they didn't like having a bo hunk local community board inside their bank lobby so it's gone, so we need to replace that..." (Bohunk is a derogatory immigrant slur, often referring to a rough or uncivilized person.) On Monday, Rockwood RBC bank manager Lisa Porterfield said remov ing the board was not benefit the village. Porterfield said the issue touched a nerve in the village. "You wouldn't believe how many phone calls and emails I've gotten...a lot of people said it was their source of community awareness...and I support the community." Church cuisine Fall means a full calendar of church suppers feasts and fellowship that should not be missed according to Councillor Doug Breen, who recently urged everyone to enjoy and support the church fundraisers. "Its church supper season... these are very important fundraisers for these small churches in the area... they have a lot to do with them being able to have enough heating oil to get through the winter in some cases," Breen said at a recent Township council meeting, noting there are posters up all over the Township advertising the suppers. How about them apples? Even with reduced quality and more costly apples, the First Rock wood Scouts annual Apple Day on the weekend was a success, bringing in approximately $700 for the organization which has 60 members Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. Because of a blossomkilling spring frost and a summer drought, some apple prices have doubled over last year, but First Rockwood Scouters said they got a good deal $25 per bushel for the main fundraiser of the year. Scouting members distributed the apples for donations at various lo cations on the village on Friday and Saturday, accepting donations. Proceeds from Apple Day will be used for programming and equipment. *** At least six Rockwood Scouts are also fundraising to pay to attend this summer 's 13th annual Canadian Scouts National Jamboree in Alberta. It will cost them each $2,000 to attend the 10-day Scout camp. Want to help defray the cost? Contact scoutergordon@gmail.com FREE WEEKLY DROP-IN FOR YOGA FOR ADULTS & STORIES FOR CHILDREN Stressed? Organized by a nonprofit group of members of the local farming community, the event features a parade of farm equip ment, festooned with Christmas lights and decorations that snakes it way through the village. The parade is "one of the single most important events that the Township holds," according to Mayor White, who spoke in favour of a staff report to continue the in-kind help. He said the Parade is good for economic development, drawing thousands of people into the village, and that the Township "has an obligation to give back" to the volunteers who make it happen each year. In a report to council, Mark Robertson, the Township's Manager of Public Works, said each year they provide in-kind assistance to Parade organizers, helping them get necessary approvals, insurance, and coordinating and helping with road closures and traffic control. Robertson said the Parade has a "very real potential impact on the (Township) budget." Last year, staff provided 160 hours of employee time, 63 hours of equipment time and $34 worth of materials to the Parade, at a total cost of $7,128. Councillor Corey Woods said he had no problem with the Parade itself, but did have a problem with the $7,128, later asking if a community organization could help with the event, like the Guelph Lion's support of the Santa Claus parade. " We ' r e n o t s a v i n g a dime if we say no," argued Councillor Doug Breen, who pointed out that they would not save the $7,128 if Council didn't support the Parade the staff time would just be spent on other Township work. This year's Farmers' Parade of Lights the 20th edition is December 13.
