In a no fanfare, seamless transfer, the new American owners of Acton's Galvcast Manufacturing Inc. have taken over the hot dipping galvanized steel operation on Commerce Galvcast sold to U.S. firm Crescent. All 168 employees kept their jobs. The business was started in 1981 by seven members including four brothers and a nephew of the local Christopher family. Of the remaining five shareholders, two retired with the sale and three remain on the management team of AZZ Galvanizing of Fort Worth, Texas, which approached Galvcast last spring. Company spokesperson Kelly Christopher said the decision to sell was "emotional" and "not easy." She said key to the deal was AZZ's commitment to keep all staff, and continue to support all of the community organizations and events that Galvcast did. "After being in business for 31 years, and some of the shareholders being retirement age, that was part of the mix," Christopher said, adding AZZ owns 34 galvanizing plants and there is room for expansion at the two plants in Acton.
