2 THE NEW TANNER Medical centre rezoning for a home improvement building centre Someone wants to open a retail store/ building construction/ home improvement store on the site of the former Acton Medical Centre, and has filed an application with the Town's Committee of Adjustment to make it happen. The site at the corner of Mill and Fredrick Streets is zoned for a long list of commercial uses, and the leasee wants build a small addition to the existing building for storage, and "tweak" the definition of a retail store to allow for the sale of building construction supplies, without outdoor display or sales. That would require relief from the Town's Zoning Bylaw to reduce the required loading space and put it in an exterior side yard, to reduce setbacks from neighbouring properties, and to allow sales of construction/home improvement materials. "I don't know who's actually made the application, to tell you the truth," McKeon said on Sunday, adding, "I provided a lease for them and now they're working through to get it rezoned to suit their purposes." November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Halton members of Halton Violence Prevention Council to mark the beginning of Woman Abuse Prevention Month on Monday November 5, at the Halton Region, Rotunda in Oakville. The public and media are welcome to attend as Halton Violence Prevention Council hangs it's "Act Against Violence" banners throughout the Region for the month of November. The Council's mission is to end violence against women and their children in our community. It is a coordinating committee which works towards improving services for women and children experiencing abuse, in order to achieve a healthy Halton community. Council members include Halton Regional Police, the Halton Region, child welfare and counselling agencies, health services as well as school boards and legal services. This year the Council's work includes "Women helping women", an initiative to encourage women who have experienced abuse to get involved in the issue of violence against women. The initiative is an opportunity for women to speak up and speak out, to network and support each other and to share their ideas about services in our community. What do they think is helpful, what should be different and what do they really need after the abuse as they rebuilt their lives? The council continues to be engaged in the Neighbours, Friends and Families Campaign which is a provincial campaign to raise awareness of the signs of woman abuse so people who are close to an at-risk woman or a man who uses abusive behaviours can help.
