Starting Monday, officers and volunteers will be deployed to various residential neighbourhoods to check for unlocked vehicles with valuables in plain sight. Offending residents will be contacted and educated on securing their vehicles and property. The goal is for the public to change their habits and to prevent themselves from becoming a victim. The initiative is part of Halton police's focus on Crime Prevention Week which is themed "Engaged Communities Prevent Crime." Halton police want citizens to be engaged in what takes place in their communities and take steps to be more vigilant and active in preventing crime. For example, theft from motor vehicles is an ongoing problem throughout the Region. In 2011 there were approximately 2,328 incidents of thefts from motor vehicles. To the end of September there have been 1,693 incidents. Between 85 to 92 percent of the incidents were preventable as the vehicles were left unlocked and contained items like GPS, wallets, purses, cell phone, iPod, money and computers.
