Rotting tree limbs knock power out THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2012 THE NEW TANNER 3 Some homeowners faced with `fried' electronics Witnesses four blocks away heard a boom and then a fireball "the size of a Volkswagen" lit up skies after branches from a rotting Manitoba Maple tree fell on power lines at the Beardmore transformer station Monday morning, knocking out power to 2,700 Halton Hills Hydro customers in Acton for an hour. A Hydro crew spliced a section out of sagging 44,000-volt line that was stretched by the falling limbs at the substation, located just south of Agnes and Elgin Streets. When Hydro's system recognized a foreign object on the line, it sent fault to the main feeder from Fergus, and power to a section of the line was isolated leaving all of Acton, except areas east of Churchill Road, without power, beginning at 11:35 a.m. At least four Kingham Road residents complained to Hydro that the power surge related to the outage "fried" some of their electronic equipment including a digital cable box, wireless router, two computers, a home entertainment centre, a carbon monoxide detector, lights on a ceiling fan, an oven, a microwave and a 61-inch television. In an email Tuesday, Hydro President and CAO Art Skidmore said letters would be handdelivered to customers affected by the outage and voltage spike, advising them of the next steps, which he did not specify. One angry affected Kingham resident said a Hydro official told her in a phone call on Tuesday to contact her home insurance company, as Halton Hills Hydro is not responsible for any losses or damage from the outage. POWER OUT: Falling limbs from a rotting Manitoba Maple tree caused an hour-long power outage for 2,300 Halton Hills Hydro customers of on Monday morning in Acton. After power was isolated on the line to the Beardmore substation, crews removed the branches and made repairs. Submitted photo Imagine Halton Hills - RSVP for a Town-wide sustainability celebration Don't miss your chance to help shape the future of Halton Hills.
