12 Town to help veterans with a Community Covenant The Town's desire to become even more "veteran-friendly" will be expanded with Town councillors' move to join with Veteran Affairs Canada in a Community Covenant, like the Newfoundland/ Labrador community of Conception Bay South did last year. Regional/Acton Councillor Clark Somerville raised the issue and received both committee, and then his colleague's support for the initiative. Through a Community Covenant, the Town could showcase partnerships, organizations, programs and services which support Veterans and their families. On Monday, Councillor Somerville said the Covenant with Veterans Affairs would "be a good fit" for Halton Hills, and add to its on-going support for Veterans, including waiving property taxes for the two Legion branches in Halton Hills, supporting the Remembrance Day and Candlelight Tribute ceremonies, and putting poppies on street signs in wartime housing areas of Acton and Georgetown. "Maybe there is enough interest in the community for a group to step up and say `we want to make Halton Hills a veteransfriendly community to show the value we have for people who have served in the Armed Forces,'" Somerville said. Next steps include finding a leader or leaders to spearhead the issue which could include the Acton and Georgetown Legions, Halton Public Health and Social Assistance departments, the local Candlelight Tribute committee and local seniors. As well, the Town will complete an inventory in existing activities that support veterans, and make sure there is "significant, sufficient and sustainable support" to reach the goals of a Community Covenant.
